At least 1997 , Total annihilation dose 1920x1080 + res without having to do anything and even quake 1 can i bet with a console command :)

Yep you can. I can remember playing at a cyber cafe around '96 and one the guys working there had a machine setup with a whopping 32meg with some nice high res Quake running. Might have been 720p even (Dont remmeber the fps being great though)
He was using the lan server to mess around after hours :D

Most machine had 4 or 8meg and we were at 640x480 at that time I think and that was high res for the day compared to older games.
We were still messing around with 80 column text mode only 5 years earlier after all

thought i should just add this, 2048x1536 resolution squeezed onto a 21" crt (hp p1120) still looks better than any HD tv out there, no matter the size, long live CRT's!!!!!!!!

because they are a lot bigger for a start

no im talking the same sized ones, take a 19" widescreen monitor can be had for £100, yet a tv that size is almost double. and explanation for this? or just people getting ripped off?

i think a 19" monitor wouldnt come with the features a tv does, so i dont think its a rip off, but the average joe wouldnt know what we meant if we went into technical terms about it, so yea, slight rip off.
