Hi, my current PC is dieing so want to get a new one, i have a £2,000 budget. I have looked over the internet for the best prices so some parts are from here, and other places

the parts i have so far are

intel core i7 990x £660.00

Asus Rampage III Black Edition £360.00

Corsair H100 Hydro £88.00

Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB)1600MHz £136.00

OCZ ZX Series 1250W £125.00

coolermaster-haf-x £133.00

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB £45.00

OCZ Agility 3 120gb £157.00

Samsung 12x BD-ROM £54.00

the graphics card im unsure what to get, i have a budge of £250 for that.

the PC will be used for gaming as well as doing uni work where i will need power for programming, video editing, image editing, running 1 or more virtual machines or doing several of these things at once.

also anything u think may increase performance would be helpful too

990x is very steep, get a 980x and clock it to 990x speeds, plus you'll save £200, then get a GTX 580...

No point getting the Rampage Black Edition unless your getting more than 2 video cards, unless you like the lights on the heatsink :)

Just No.

Get the i7 2600k as said above. It out performs the Extreme cpus in most tests and is a hell of a lot cheaper too. Not to mention that the 1366 socket is dead.

i want to get 1 video card, but looking to upgrade it in the future, and i choose the 990x because this PC i want to last ~3yrs, therefore choose the latest products out atm

also the mobo i chose cos its easy overclock as well as its expansion room

I'd go with Stulid's advice.

Go with the i7 2600k, save yourself a load of money to spend on SLI! If you're not going SLI you won't need that huge PSU I'm guessing. Even going SLI wouldn't need that much power?

So yeh... if it was me I'd go with the 2600k and 2x GTX 580s. Wish I had that kind of money to spend :(

Ivy Bridge is out next year, the Gen3 motherboard I linked too will support it also and has the latest PCI-E generation of bandwidth.

Buying a socket 1366 now is dumb, spending nearly £700 on a CPU is dumb.

You can buy the i7 2600K, have a faster CPU now and still have money left over to upgrade to Ivybridge when it comes out.

Sorry if you dont like my phrasing but its the only way to get it across.

I know when i'm beaten...new generation of i7's seem to be better and a lot cheaper.

Ive got that 1250W PSU and still wont utilize all of it when i get my second GTX 590 so, if your not SLI'ing, theres really no point

All you have to do is swap the CPU/motherboard and Ram choice over:)

Stick a GTX570/580 in it and pocket the rest of the money, maybe buy a silly sized monitor?

Get a Samsung F3 1TB for a fiver less than the WD Black. Grab yourself a GTX 580. If you can get a good brand 850/900w PSU for ~100 pound then go for that over the OCZ, if not then the OCZ is great value for money even if you will never use all of the stated wattage. 80 plus gold, full modular and 1.2KW is amazing for only 125.

would it be better buying the core i5 2600k and wait for the ivy bridge to come out then ?

Yes.

A £230 CPU instead of a £660 CPU.

A £160 motherboard instead of £360

A £40 RAM kit instead of £136

Saving - £726

For a faster and newer PC.

I am pretty sure a Ivy Bridge CPU will be less than £726:)
