High failure rate for Toshiba laptops outside warranty?

Maybe this is just bad luck or something, but I've had three people in the last 24 hours alone come to me with Toshiba AC adapters that have burned up and in one case fried the system board of their laptop.

Given that I deal with much smaller numbers than in most business environments, and these were only subjected to light use at most and are 12-18 months old I do have to wonder about build quality...

Toshiba build quality is appauling.

I've had mine for 13 months now, it has been back to the manufacturers twice. First time was four months after purchase, the motherboard blew. Second time was in February this year, when the speakers/sound output died.

Furthermore, I've had enormous problems with other bits of hardware and Windows. The CD try opens maybe once in ten attempts (if it gets stuck, you have to restart to get it open). The mousepad has never worked, same goes for the webcam. The battery often refuses to charge requiring you to turn the system off, remove the battery and then put it back in again (and the less said about the battery life, the better).

The ethernet port simply seems to stop working every eight hours (requiring me to reset our router, that is the only fix, our desktop is fine 24/7).

Etc etc. Shocking piece of junk, can't wait for my OcUK laptop to arrive so I chuck my Toshiba in the bin.

My ac adapter does get pretty hot, but nothing uncommon to any other ac adapter. Probably want to be looking at how they throw the adapter about. Most people i know seem to just drop it on the floor when they want to plug it in, can't be doing them any good tbh!

To my knowledge they haven't been thrown around, and that doesn't explain electrical issues at all...its as though the wiring or the AC\DC components are being overloaded.

Have they had the AC adapters replaced at anytime as there have been some fake AC adapters knocking about, I have seen quite a few Toshiba and Sony ones, they usually have no Rohs sign and are very lightweight compared to the original ones.

Nope, stock Toshiba ones.

I have a toshiba laptop from 1999 and it still works, the screen hinge has worn out a bit but they admitted it was a known problem and they would fix it if I could be bothered to post the 400mhz laptop to them. Hinge has just lost its "stick" so it flops about if you dont hold the screen.

Many of my friends have toshiba laptops and they been fine.

Sorry this is completely off topic.

Beermonster where did you get your signature picture? I'm partially colour blind and it looks like one of the tests. It looks like there should be something there but it's just lots of random dots to me. Very cool if this is what it is.

hi yes its ment to be one of those Ishihara colour blind test it does say Beermonster i just knocked it up in photoshop using the stipple effect. I guess it's just my odd sense of humour showing through.

I had a Toshiba P100 with no problems in the two years I owned it. I sold it to a work colleague. He spilled water on the keyboard, Toshiba came and collected it the next day and had it back to him the same week. Quality service if anything goes wrong.

I'm badly colourblind in the red/green spectrum but oddly I can see beermonsters sig quite clearly. Just to keep on subject I need my wife to tell me when the charging light on my old Tosh 6100 turns from orange to green as I can't tell :(

im unfortunate enough to be in charge or sourcing and supply of over 50 laptops at work...

over the last 10 years or so been through a lot of different makes and only two stand up to heavy daily use and being lugged about without breaking... tosh and ibm/lenovo. (though HP/Compaq are a close 3rd)

i don't let anyone get any other brand now... purely as they are rock solid and never give me grief, though lenovo get the nod on reliability as just NEVER go wrong, but downside is they look out of the stone age :(

bane of my life though on laptops is where the power socket gets pulled from the motherboard and needs to be resoldered... on some laptops you have to totally strip them to get to it :(

i feel sorry for colourblind people.

Im colourblind too.

For me, I have issues seeign the difference between pink and orange.

But one thing that really makes me wonder...

I can see that orange is orange

I can see that pink is pink

How am I colourblind then?

But I am.

Back to the scoreboard, but what would be the LapTop to go for?

My sisters Toshiba laptop has just gone. It wont turn on now (outside of warrenty) The battery light just flashes. Could this be very little power in battery and AC not charging it?

Are Toshiba doing anything to sort this?

What model is the laptop? Older Toshiba's suffer from the power board becoming disconnected from the motherboard due to heating/cooling. May just need the connector re-seating.

i dont know off by heart and she will be asleep by now. She bought it feb 07. You think it could be thats fault?
