High idle cpu temp in prebuilt AMD pc

A mate asked me my advice on his mates new pc, but with it being prebuilt I am not sure what to suggest. He said its idling at 80c and isnt downclocking when idle.

Its an AMD A10-7850k

With it being pre-built I'd expect it to run hot as it'll be using the stock cooler, but 80c sounds too much. Maybe a faulty sensor? Or the cpu cooler isnt seated properly?

I'm guessing reseating the cpu cooler to see if it helps is out of the question as it'll void the warranty?

Also not sure why it isn't showing the temp for each core like it does with my intel cpu. Is there a better temp monitoring program to use?

TIA

It's a prebuilt - you buy a prebuilt for convenience and warranty. Tell him to take a screenshot and get it collected for repair, don't touch the insides.

Thats what I was thinking. He has installed a gfx card, but that wont cause any issues with warranty would it?

Looking at the screenshot he sent me, does that package temp mean all cores are running at that temperature? On my intel chip it shows 4 individual temps. Is there a more amd specific temperature monitoring app he could try?

Package temp is you core temp and CPU temp is your socket temp. Package temp is the one you want to pay attention to. Amd processors use a different algorithm to measure their core temperatures, there is only one temperature sensor whereas intel have a sensor on each core. This is why many amd users complain why the only see one core appearing on programs like coretemp etc.

Starting with the Phenoms, AMD's digital sensor no longer reports an absolute temperature value anymore, but a reading with a certain offset, which is I honestly don't know. I think it's an offset ofbetween 10 - 20c and as far as I know is only accurate under load conditions, similar to intel cpu's in that regard.

For software you could use AMD System Monitor, that will tell you how far off you are from tjmax..

Check to see your power plan, it may be set to high performance that may lead to higher cpu cycle on idle, set it to balanced and see if your temps drop a bit.

Those temps do seem quiet high, even for a stock cooler however..

Is the screen shot at idle? Because the cores should be clocked lower if so, they are running full speed. Do they clock down? Anything running in the background.

There is definitely something running as the cores are between 26 - 30% usage.

Thanks, I've asked him on steam but he's offline at the moment. He did say the cores are always running at full clock, which was what he thought was causing the heat issues, but I didnt think the cores just being at full clock would cause that.

I just assumed that 30% usage was a momentary jump as I sometimes get them, but even if its something running the 80c temp still seems high.

What is the general consensus then? Send it back or leave it until there's a problem? It was bought from a catalogue, so I don't think they will even understand the problem.
