hi there, a guy at work is selling a golf VR6 with 150,000 miles. the only cars ive had with miles like this are diesel audis and 406s etc

how do they VR6 engines handle the high mileage? after 4-5 owners it will be hard to work out how well its been looked after

the price isnt that great considering the mileage and it doesnt have leather either.

anything particular to look out for? or will these things litterally go on and on?

ill find out about the tensioners

cheers

I vaguely remember an ebay auction posted in here ages back of a VR6 that had huge mileage on it...something like 3-400k miles and still running ok.

Mine has 170K, engine is 189 bhp (with some mods). The rest of the car has not stood up so well. ;)

Getting better tho as I get my hands dirty most weekends. Nearly a respectable car!

Pics in sig are from when I first got it.

Here's one of mine from a recent Golf+ photoshoot. :)

I remember a TV series had a review of buying these used. They recommended a radiator change at around 90K, I'm not sure if they dissintergrate or sludge up really badly. That and accident damage were the only major things to look for.

Hmm, been on the lookout for one of these myself. Seems most of the ones on autotrader which are up for round about 3-4k have covered anywhere from 50-100,000 miles, sometimes more.
I guess if it's looked after then there's not much to worry about enginewise.
I'm assuming with high mileage you have the usual running gear/bodywork etc spots to look out for as with most golfs, or is there anything specific to the VR6 range?

^^

There's always going to be the "odd" one out from the pack, as VR's tend to be very reliable high milage. Parts can be dear so best trying find cheap parts one bay and the VW forums.

I've seen VR's on ebay with 190k+ miles.

Lets just hope this thread doesn’t turn into the epic "cam chain vs cam belt" debate just like the last one did :)

Bear in mind before you pay big money for the car, it'll be difficult to sell when you've added say 20 , 30 or 40k on to it.

We know the car is bulletproof and will go for more, but the vast majority of buyers won't.

big money on a 150k vr6 golf?
to be fair the "vast majority of buyers" will have already turned there nose up at any car that has gone well over the 100k mark.

your vr is lookin as clean as ever Barry! you cant help but show it off ;)

Yeah, but the vast majority of VR6 buyers will have some sort of insight into the engine. :) The 2.9, was actually less reliable. :)

they just tend to run a little hotter, you would do well to concentrate on the cooling side then the 2.9 will be equally as reliable. my 2.9 rado ran faultlessly

Borewash was a common problem mate, and starting them could be a pain. My mate's 2.9 doesn't always start on the first turn of the key. :)

D4VE : Cheers. :)
