Don't worry it wont explode, on the flip side if you put regular unleaded in a car that requires super then it can cause detonation, also I think its worth pointing out that the octane number describes, well the octane, its not an indication of quality, i.e Tescos Super and Shell V-Power are both 99 RON but V-Power is better quality.

So the XR2 etc of old actually wanted 97 octane fuel? Did this help the valve seat burn or was it the lead content within the fuel?
The extra octane was probably to allow for greater ignition advance.

Where have I said anywhere sells anything less than 95?
To understand my argument you need to understand that this isn't the first time Fox has said "Premium is the lowest grade you can get in this country.", its a statement I've observed him use a few times.
The thing you also need to get is that Premium doesn't mean good - fuel varies between suppliers.

No, Tesco Super is now only 97 RON. The 99 Ron fuel is now called Tesco Momentum99. If you see Super at a Tesco station now, it will be a site which doesnt sell Momentum99 and will thus be 97 RON.
And the issue with that is?
The crux of your argument is that you don't like to use the term "Premium" to describe what is usually the base/entry level fuel. Unfortunately, "Premium" is the standardised and accepted definition of the base/entry level fuel that is supplied in the UK. Therefore, you can really have no argument with Fox. You can dislike it, but there's no point to argue. It's called "Premium" and in this context what the other uses of the word "premium" may be, such as describing a relatively better or superior product, are totally irrelevant, even if in fact, when considered in a global context, they are perfectly valid.

Because it's a completely factual statement. The lowest grade retail unleaded in this country is Premium Unleaded. It simply amazes me that you continue to try and argue with me.
It's called Premium - its written on every pump, deal with it for goodness sake.
I dont really give a stuff how good you think it is or isnt (Perhaps you've been performing some chemical analysis on road fuels so you can claim one brand isnt as good as another, your results would be well received), it doesnt change the fact that everything I've said in this thread has been correct and, in capital letters this time because hopefully it might finally go in..
PREMIUM UNLEADED IS 95RON. IT IS THE LOWEST FORM OF UNLEADED YOU CAN BUY AT UK FILLING STATIONS.
It doesnt matter that you dont like the word. It doesnt matter that you personally, with your wealth of motorsport experience, do not deem it to be 'Premium enough' for your needs. All that matters is that the British Standards agency have said it must be called Premium. So it is. Case closed!
To be honest, my opinion is that compared with the full spectrum of available road fuels worldwide, 95RON really is a premium fuel anyway.
There. Now stop arguing! If you go and read the OP again you'll notice it was because he was confused about what 'Premium' was, he bought Super instead. Therefore the whole point in this thread is to explain to the poor guy what Premium Unleaded is.

But just for informations sake, America uses the following system: 87PON (Regular), 89PON (Mid-Grade), and 92-93PON (Premium), now 92PON is about equal to 95RON which means our premium unleaded is roughly the same octane as Americas, I assume that's one of the reasons our petrol starts at premium and not regular, so that it is placed correctly on a global scale, /shrug

Which is why the OP posted in the first place - he got confused when filling up, therefore I explained the term to him. And Mike 'I know everything but in reality nothing' Hiow took issue with what I said, so now we've had half a page of him arguing about it even though somebody has quoted from the British Standard responsible for the naming of petrol.
