High oil usage

I have a 2005 GT4 edition 350z that I believe has a problem that Nissan North America issued a TSB for in excessive oil consumption (for more info - http://www.350z-tech.com/forums/123...0059-2006-350z-oil-consumption-problems.html_)

Obviously the car is out of warranty and given the 'fix' was a replacement engine I am a bit concerned, and I don't think the uk area has really acknowledged the issue. I haven't done any measurements yet of oil usage but I am positive it is drinking oil having done several top-up's over the past couple of months including a full oil service in August.

Will there be any issues if I just continue keeping a close eye on it & topping it up or do I need to do anything more serious/can checks be made to see if there are any problems/problems in the making?

Cheers.

How much oil is it consuming? Most manufactures say 1 litre for every 1000 miles isn't excessive (or atleast they use to).

As I say I haven't measured it particularly but the oil service was done late august I think, I have put in over 2 litres since then and have had the oil light come on when taking sharp corners (hence the topping up). I have another service on Wednesday so will measure the usage properly from then. Most forums that I have looked at kinda poo poo the stat of 1 litre per thousand and the TSB Nissan released states anything over a 3rd of a litre is too much.

About 4,000. I would guess a total of 8 litres of oil has gone in and the level when I checked today before emptying the rest of my top up bottle in was below the L on the dip stick.

Take to a specialist like Abbey Motors? Seem to know their stuff...

Sad to hear you got issues with your Z, I've grown somewhat attached to mine now :(

Can anyone advise on if they think there would be any general issues though by just ensuring it stays topped up between the min/max levels? I am just concerned that the engine must be doing something with the oil & that may be causing damage etc.

I don't think Nissan ever confirmed what the actual issue was, they just fitted v2 of the engine & crossed their fingers and for a number of people it didn't help after 3 new engines.

If the engine is burning it, what does that mean though? Is that causing damage that keeping it topped up will do nothing about or should it be ok?

Usually means it's an ineffective scraper ring, or the crankcase breather is sending it through the combustion chamber. Only extra damage will be emissions and possible cat damage longer term.

If it is going through the breather system, a catch tank that returns oil to the sump can help reduce it.

I put around 2.5 litres per week in my Scania, it covers roughly 3k miles over 7 days,

That said, it's a 12litre Diesel engine that's done over 270k, on the other hand, my old 2.8 5series petrol used around half a litre over a similar distance, but a lot longer time period, despite having covered a similar number of miles!

I'd be concerned if I owned the OP's 350Z, seems excessive to me.

Silly question, but does it ever idle for prolonged periods of time?

hijacking the thread somewhat here but this was an answer to a question i have had recently. Will idling a car for a long time generaly make it use more oil?

1 litres per 2000 miles is high but not excessive.

What oil do you use and how do you drive it?

I agree but it is using more than that. I have put in over 2 litres, it was fully filled when I started and is below L now on the dipstick. At best I would say 1 litre per 1000 miles.

I use Mobil 1 5w - 30
Driving style is normally driving at max of 3k revs with the occasional bit of harder acceleration from time to time, but it is my daily driver doing around 450 miles a week with 90% being motorway miles in 6th gear on cruise control.

Brookert, the car doesn't idle for long periods no.

If the car is using 1L ever 1000 miles and you're sure there isn't a relatively innocent explination for it doing so then I would quite honestly get rid.
