High oil usage

My fabia VRS has the sad oil use issue.

I used just short of 8 litres in 5000 miles. Castrol Edge FST oil.

Skoda have replaced a breather pipe which can cause the issue but its still apparent. 'Official' oil consumption tests by the dealer back up the 8litres per 5k miles. Scary.

Engine has only done 17k miles, off to the garage later to work out if it is new engine time.

Does your usage compare to this ?!

Try a thicker oil and check the breather system isn't blocked.

Car is in the garage tomorrow so I will ask them to check the breather system, given the TSB above though I am guessing it won't be blocked as that sounds like an easy fix. What oil would you recommend and does using thicker oil have any side effects as I would guess the oil I am using at the mo is recommended for a reason?

Conanius, I don't believe mine is that bad but as said mine is all estimation at the mo.

A couple of people have said get rid but I love my car :) aside from emissions and a cat problem potentially further down the line, are there any issues people can think of if I just ensure it is properly topped up all of the time?

I assume the coolant looks normal and you've not seen any obvious oil leaks? I'd have a very good look around the engine bay.

If it's a piston ring thing and engine is burning oil, you'd usually expect it to be a bit more smoky (blue smoke). At 1l/1000mi I'd really expect some visible smoke if the engine were burning the oil.

That is absolutely ludicrous, i'd be using over 4L/month at that rate, i'd be spending more on oil than i do on Sky :p

Thank god skoda UK are picking up the tab then !

They we're good enough to pay for all the oil I had bought before too, so I can't really complain too much.

Just sat in the dealership awaiting news.

Pretty sure the coolant looked ok and there have been no oil marks where I park & similarly the engine bay hasn't looked to have been sprayed. I haven't noticed any smoking.

Am I missing something or is it using 1L per 500 miles? and not 1L per 2000 miles?

For mine I am guessing 1L per 1000 miles so in the middle :)

And how much oil is in a diesel lorry engine to help us compare to this petrol sports car engine....

From my trucks handbook,
The quantity required to fill between the upper (full) and lower (too low) mark on the dipstick is approximately 7.5 litres.

The sump capacity iirc is circa 25 litres, in the grand scheme of things, it uses barely nothing.

In the old days we always had to top up our engine oil/keep an eye on it but these days my Golfs oil never changes & hasn't in all the time I've had it (18 months 'ish).
Anyways if I had a gorgeous 350z that used oil like that I'd get rid & get another.

Which plate was that on?, I'm looking at a 62 plate having done 4.5K mile. I was wondering if it has potential to be a culprit.

(Think my post count just answered the question...)
