High ping with Google Drive

Bought Google drive a week ago.

Started uploading lots of files and google photos uploads in the background on my Samsung Galaxy S10 and for some reason google photos is WAY WAY slower than google drive. I'm talking a few files get uploaded each day with google photos but many more with google drive.

My brother is getting high ping when I am uploading. 180ms up from 12ms.
He plays LOL so needs low ping.

I'm with BT, 70mpbs DL, 12-18mpbs UL.

Using their supplied router (the new one as I went with BT this year).

Is this an issue that can be fixed?

Is it a hardware issue and perhaps I need a more powerful router?

Google searching shows me some people say there is no fix, others say limit upload speed (without explaining how to do it).

Thanks

You can’t fix it. It hasn’t got anything to do with Google Drive either. Whenever you upload it’ll cause higher pings because you’re saturating the upload.

Surely there MUST be a fix?

What about that restricting upload speed thing I mentioned?

If it's from your phone unless the Google app has an option to limit it then you'd need a router that has the ability to limit upload on certain devices. The Google Drive app on the PC has options to limit upload but I guess it's just because they're coming from your phone it just uses the full upload.

Check if your router has QoS settings as that could help if you configured it corectly.

Lets hope the advice offered in this thread is better received than the last one ey? As stated above, if you saturate your uplink, you will impact latency sensitive applications, just as when torrenting was a thing, this is widely acknowledged and known. If you restrict your uploading and leave a reasonable margin free, you can reduce the impact on other applications, particularly latency sensitive ones, that may or may not be acceptable in this situation. As to how you would do it, if you're using the google drive application, under preferences, settings, it has network, the rest should be pretty obvious (though i'm on OSX, windows will be slightly different no doubt). Personally I use Ubuntu and again, that's set-up differently.

I always find Google drive trash, even uploading from my UK and US dedicated servers

Strange, non of my UK/EU boxes have any problem maxing out, right upto gigabit, but i'm doing multiple concurrent transfers. It's more variable on boxes with mechanical drives, but anything with an SSD is saturating the uplink consistently.

It's not a case of a more powerful router, just one with more options.

E.g. the Draytek I use at home allows me to limit each connection to have a specific amount of download and upload - this limits download speeds but means e.g. no single person in my house can "hog" the internet.

Can my router do that? I described what router I have from BT (bought this year so I presume there is only one router they supply for ADSL vs fibre (I do not have fibre)).

I upload from both my PC and using Google photos from my Samsung Galaxy S10, and also from my Macbook Air. For PC and Macbook I am using Google Chrome to upload.

I will check QoS thing but how do I know how to configure it correctly?

Thanks

I am using the browser Google Drive as I am terrified of using backup and sync as I read a terrible story about someone whose files all got deleted due to the sync aspect of it. He/she deleted the files they uploaded thinking they were safely stored on GD (Google Drive), only to find out when he/she deleted the original files from their PC, the files got deleted on GD.

So I see no network options in GD in Google Chrome. Just checked on my phone too, and there are no options there either.

I wonder if it's possible to set it by time? He games till early morning sometimes so it would be useful if I could set the upload to be restricted between certain times only? Multiple times throughout the day.

Thanks

Trash in what way?

As with the Storage thread, you seem to intentionally going out of your way to find really poor reasons to do things badly again, so good luck with that.

Using Google drive through the browser isn't doing things badly. It's an option anyone can use, hence why it exists.

Quit you're personal vendetta and offer useful advice or don't reply.

I just been through the other threads. I can see why people are avoiding your questions now :)

Can my router do that? I described what router I have from BT (bought this year so I presume there is only one router they supply for VDSL2 vs fibre (I do not have fibre)).

You'll need a custom router as the BT one usually doesn't give you such options. Do a search online regarding your specific model though, as it may have changed.

The clue is in the name - backup and SYNC. sync mean changes on one device are synced to the others and that includes deleting files. Google photos has an option to remove device photos that are already synced to free up space - that's what he/she should have done, not try to delete photos manually.

Just woke up. Typed you're in my half awake state.

What's the issue? That guy tries to twist things.

Google drive can be used from a browser too. If it couldn't, it wouldn't exist. There's nothing 'bad' about using it in a browser.

As I said, I don't want to risk accidentally deleting my data by using sync.

You mean a third party router... Not a custom one?

Well since you insisted all replies must be useful, it's your, not you're.

If you think that pointing out you're choosing to make your own life more difficult by creating at least part of the issue you describe is some sort of personal vendetta, then as I say, best of luck. The default action of the app is 'never remove both copies', on that basis surely you can see why what you say is frankly stupid - you'd have to choose 'always remove both copies' and ignore 'always ask before removing both copies' and leave it over 30 days for trash to be emptied for what you describe to happen. I guess if you're that kind of user who would be stupid enough to choose delete both copies without grasping what it will do, then you're probably the kind of person who would complain about it.

I am using 3 different devices. On my phone I'm using Google photos and clearing space as you have written.

I obviously know what sync means hence why I wrote about it and said I'm afraid to use BACKUP AND SYNC on my PC and MacBook due to the story I read, that I summarised.

I've never used backup and sync. I've been afraid to use it due to the story I told you about. I've only got the original files and no backups so I do not want to risk losing them.

Instead of calling people stupid and telling them they're making bad decisions etc, you could have said something like 'Don't worry, backup and sync by default will not delete both copies of files' etc etc.

It is a personal vendetta for this reason.

Sorry i thought it was about all the stuff in the OP, my bad.

Except that isn't how it works. it does delete both my default.

I don't think he's twisting things IMO.

I wasn't talking about it being used in a browser either.

Looks like you already know the answers so you don't need my advice.

Yeah it seems you're still not reading what he or others have said. They've said the files deleted remain for 30 days before being fully removed. Even Google's website describes how to ensure files deleted from your devices remain on Google.

Anyway as mentioned you already know what you need to limit your upload speed per device. See what routers out there have QoS capabilities and read more into it. You've only mentioned that you have a router from BT, but I'm sure you can find out more about it and whether it supports that type of functionality.

Good luck! :)

I use the Google Backup & Sync client on Windows, it has these settings available

Setting a limit will allow you to upload data without totally hosing your connection.
