Hi all,

I have recently got a 1.8 zetec focus and with it being a lot more 'nippy' than my 1.2 corsa i do like to rev it quite a bit. Now i know you souldnt rev it too high before your engine is warm but sometimes i do. (you know what its like :) )

Now what damage am i doing to my car...?

The oil will still be quite thick, which means when you rev the engine hard the thick oil can't get up through the oilways properly.

This causes oil starvation in the head and various parts of the engine which basically means that the components in the engine start grinding against each other.

It won't hurt it if you do it once every now and then, but doing it everyday will eventually cause something to go pop.

Don't do it with the Zetec lumps.

When I had my 2l Mk1 Focus I was always told that the Zetec engines will go on forever if you leave them to warm up before revving the nuts off them.

IMO I suggest you really try not to do it. ;)

It certainly does.

To be fair I used to do it quite a bit (slip road near my old house). However, just before I parked it on it's roof in a field... it was burning oil like no tomorrow.

Just keep an eye on the temp gauge and as soon as it's in the middle, gun it! ;)

Did you have the new shape 1.2 Corsa? Do you really find it that much "nippier" lower down? I know you will of noticed a HUGE increase in top end acceleration and torque all over, however, the 1.2 Corsa has a pretty good 0-60 time iirc and when I had one as a courtesy car it wasn't as slow as I thought it would be, up to about 60 anyway. ;)

water temp normal does not mean the oil temp is high enough to start 'gunning it'

And scarface you MUST be joking. A 1.2 corsa does 0-60 in 13 seconds! That is horrifically slow.

Well said, my comment was in slight jest. ;)

12 seconds actually. Which is a lot faster than I thought it would be. (It feels faster than 12s too).

11.8 actually, 1.2 16v twinport does any way, non twinport does it in 12.0

Ah yes, was an '06 Plate 1.2 SXI "Twin Port" I had the displeasure of driving for 3 weeks. :D

As I say it really wasn't that slow low down, it must have been the gearing as it was revving really high @ 70mph on the motorway.

The steering was ridiculously light and there was just no confidence in the car at all, even at low speed it felt as if the rear of the car was losing grip.

Oh and even after all the abuse I gave it... it was insanely economical too.

After all the Corsa gets on this forum it isn't *that* bad. Certainly not a drivers car but for your girlfriend to potter to the shops in? Maybe...

I did it on my Fiesta 1.25 and my MK1 MR2. Never had a problem with it. :D

Turn key, up the road off the 7250 limiter, scaring kids, great stuff. :D

I keep my engine under 2000rpm until the temp gague is in its centre position, then and only then, I rev it as much as the limiter will allow. :)

117k miles and it burns no oil, which is justification enough for me. ;)

I drive a derv, with no temp gauge... I have try to wait for my turbo to heat up and cool down before and after each journey... Sometimes I leave it running on the drive for a minute before leave just to be on the safe side.

And the engine should love you for it. ;)

I try to allow 10-15 mins of driving before i start pushing the engine above 3krpm just because of this. oil takes longer to heat up to temp than the water in the cooling system.

Heh, then none of you have obviously driven a 1986 Toyota Tercel 4WD estate then. 0-60 times are measured with a calendar!!! (ok, so it's only 16.7 seconds)

I have to rev the nuts off my Toyota when I leave. I've got a 250ft driveway, less than a 1/10 of a mile to the end of the road, then I'm on a 55mph highway. Taking almost 20s to get up to 60 I have to use every bit of what little bhp that thing has or I'll get squished.

And letting it warm up isn't an option. That thing takes almost 10 miles of HARD driving to warm up, letting it do it at idle would take HOURS!!

which is why some of us moved out of the stone age and purchased those new fangled petrol driven engines that were made this side of last century. :D
(though in saying that, i'm actually older than your whatever-it-is >_<)
