high temps an issue on Rampage Formula?

So I have just installed the mobo.

First off can I just say this is probably the best ASUS board I have owned. The number of features and options available is outstanding.

The only thing I am concerned about is that ASUS Probe keeps reporting the mobo, SB and NB are running too hot (48,48,45 respectively).

Now is this normal or is there anything I can do to cool this down?
 
The thermal compound they use is rubbish, and i don't think it's put on too well on assembly.
Just remove the heatsinks, clean and apply arctic silver. Reinstall and you're away.
 
I wouldn't bother replacing the thermal compound. A few people have done it and there was hardly any drop in temps. The best way is just to add a few extra fans and that should drop the temps a bit. Considering it's passive cooled the temps are fine. Probe it is just set too low, change it to a higher value or use everest. The mobo temp is only high since the sensor is next to the SB and graphics card. Also try tightening the screws on the NB, usually there a bit loose, i've found that can actually drop temps 1 or 2c

I'm actually using the Asus Maximus Formula which is very similar, just it's a X38.
 
Be very careful when removing heatsinks, they seem to have a habit of glueing them on now...nice thick glue so that the heatsink doesnt work very well, but you cant get it off.
 
I had the exact same issue, but turned on the exhaust fan at the rear and temps fell 4-5c striaght away now i am 43-45. I just was not getting any good airflow in my case untill i did that, so might be worth a try.

what are you volts like on the NB and SB?

SB = 1.1
NB = 1.4

well sb is at 1.06 and nb is at 1.34.

I was thinking of adding the optional fan onto the heatsinks but when reading the instructions for the fan it doesn't recommend putting this on when a air cooling heatsink is on as it disturbs the flow.

Well I have a 120mm fan at the back of the case pulling air out so I could try changing that round to see if it make a difference otherwise I could trying sticking a couple of 80mm fans at the top of my case and try and force the air down the centre of the case to try and get some good cold air down it.

plus given that I have just got the board I don't really want to be taking it to pieces just yet.
 
I have this board and under load the Nb regulary runs at 48-53 and the SB around 5-8 deg lower/ Idle NB 43 and SB 38 apparantly these temps are around normal for the board. You could always try some after market cooling or replacing the thermal compound that ASUS use. Also try using Everest as your temp monitor great program even it its trial form.
 
seems when i bought the rampage from OCUK i got a good one.
i have plently of airflow in my case lol

but without any modification just air my temps are 41c on the northbridge and 37c on the southbridge

and thats with 1.49v on the northbridge and default volts on the south. for 8x450fsb on my Quad. :)

under load 43c north, 38c south they hardly fluctuate at all ;D
 
I suspect that the air flow in my case isn't up to much and probably doesn't help having the side of the case of at the moment.

I will look at moving some fans about and I'm sure the heat coming from the 8800GTX is not helping as well.

Mine runs about 2 degrees cooler , its in an antec 900 case with all fans on low and ALL the cables have been routed around the back of the mobo tray so there is great airflow in the case, never had any stability problems and cpu is a q6600 running at 3.6GHz.;)

There is an ATI HD4870 in there as well kicking out plenty of heat :eek:

I use everest to monitor temps , dont like the asus probe:rolleyes:

hi guys,

Just joined the forum and i was about to post the exact topic...

The tempretures i'm getting on my X48 rampage formula are as follows..

mb = 58 deg, nb=57 and sb=62 degrees.

My system spec is as follows.

intel q9450
asus 8800 gts graphics 512mb
consair dominator pc8500 c5 2x2gb
lian-li v2000 case.

The system is not overclocked and on default settings..

i'm a bit concerned about this and was going to get some extra fans friday.

Stupid PCprobe keeps warning me my motherboard is overheating at 40 C. I don't think that's particularly high.... also Rampage Forumla.

Reckon it might be a bit fubar
 
Davetherave>The temps are normal belive it or not for this motherboard. It is specced to handle 90c before thermal protection shutdown occurs.

When I first got mine ages ago when they first came out it was kinda offputting to see the temps at the level. First thing you should do is turn off the auto NB voltage. I set mine to 1.35v.

It didn;t help when I use to have the gtx in there it use to dump a load of heat into the case so I just cut out a piece of cardboard and stuck it over the vents so it exhausted it all out the back that helped a bit.

Janmh>Yours sound a touch on the high side. But nothing major. But if it still bothers you then seeming you use the lian li v2000 and I know there is no front fan for the motherboard compartment why don;t you get a scythe kama bay cooler or alternatively to match your lian li the lian li HDD expansion kit. Model number is EX33 I think.

Krisali>I take off asus probe. It sets the warning levels to low and then give peeps a fright when it starts flashing red and making that annoying sound. Or you could set the levels yourself.

Goredwings19 thanks for the suggestion to improve airflow, i wll try the scythe and possibly an exhaust blower at the back.

You have to remember the board is passive cooled, so idle in the 40's to early 50's is perfectly fine, just as long as it's not stupidly high and loads temps are under 60. As long as you have good case air flow then theres nothing to worry about.
 
you are all worrying over nothing , it does run a bit warm but pc probe is naff, dump it and use everest.;)

with good airflow/cable management in your case and some silent fans you wont have anything to worry about. these boards are the dogs bo**ox in my opinion, once you get you head round all the bios settings you will have hours of fun changing settings to see what happens :p
