Highest seen fragmentation level

Around 45% on a computer I was looking at for a friend. Windows 98 as well.....*shudder*

I have my computer set to defrag my system drive with O&O every weekend (just a simple STEALTH defrag), don't think it ever gets much above 1% :)

About 60% or so, sometime around X'mas year, on my friend's old AMD 3800 system with a single 160GB Hitachi SATA drive that was under heavy workload. The filesystem was all messed up since it was not defragged for nearly a year, and the drive was also running low on space (approx 10% free), so plenty of fragmentation as well an MFT in multiple pieces.

Ran a disk cleanup to make some room and trash the junk files, then installed Diskeeper 2k9 pro trial version, and ran it in autodefrag mode for a couple of hours followed by a boot-time defrag. It gave a new lease of life to the system, and performance was back up to normal Since then, he's put in another HDD too so the storage load is a bit more balanced now; also he began defragging more regularly, and the system runs okay.

I've had 45% on one of my drives after NTFS compression. Worst I've ever seen was my old bosses laptop, 87% fragmentation on a 60GB drive 97% full. With all the stuff installed and set to load on boot up his average reboot time was 35 mins.

Best I've seen was when we took over the IT dept at a new company. 6 year old Dell file server that had never had a defrag ran in it's life. 6Gb free from a 420Gb volume. File access was painful !

Can't remember the exact % figure but I remember it took most of the weekend to get it running half-descent with Diskeeper!
