Just a very quick question.

Just wanted to check what was the highest socket 939 single core CPU as I'm in the process of helping a mate to upgrade his system to help it last a little bit longer.

Got a feeling it was the 4000+ but if someone could confirm this I'd be grateful.

Cheers :)

Cheers.

Just looked up the specs on the 4000+, and most people seem to be saying that its the same as an FX-53?

Different cores and manufacturing processes, besides the FX-53 was discontinued

FX-53 i think was a Sledgehammer/Clawhammer 130nm
4000+ has been a variety of cores 130nm-90nm

both are 2400mhz

Might as well go for the fastest dual core, it'll still be faster than the identical speed single core cpu.
Thats a sweeping statement, a duel core and single core at the same speed would perform differently in non optimised games/applications in what way?

Try loading a single core at 100% with a single app and tell me it's still responsive.
On a dual core it'll be 100% of core one, but the other core will be be idle, allowing you do other things. That's if the application is single core only. I know DVD Shrink does seem to use both cores, so shrinking is really fast and the PC is still resonsive. On a single core whilst the shrink is performing the machine is unusable (both set to the same priority)

People think just because a application has only single core support, then your PC will be responsive like a dual core. Not so.

Windows itself uses the total resources of the cores.

oh I have a 3700+ and 4400X2 both the same speed, and the X2 is resonsive and faster when under load. Which is to be expected. Do you really want to single task when you can multi-task when performing a single heavy CPU process?

FX57 is the fastest socket 939 single cored cpu. You maybe interested in a 4000 though, if you can find a san diego with the kab1e stepping, i had 10 of these all did 3ghz on below 1.4v

I appreciate that but not everybody uses more than one application at a time. Also not all applications take advantage of more than one core. Ive looked at changing my 3700 but as i dont do anything on my PC that would currently benifit from a second core, CPU speed is the priority for me.
By the time Games can take advantage of 2 cores then faster more efficiant CPUs will be out.

Thanks for replies.

My mate went for a 4000+ in the end as he got it at a good price, San Diego core. He's not really bothered about overclocking and Isn't a heavy gamer so hopefully this should make his system last another year at least :)
