Hiking in Snowdon next week

Those pictures (the tryfan is now my background - ) make me want to jump in the car and drive off to Snowdonia. I don't have the kit so i better stay at home, plus it will be very wet and wet is always worse than cold.

I really need to get back out there and start getting back in practice.

The glyders are my favourite mountains in Snowdonia. I'd always go up there rather than Snowdon. I've only ever been halfway up Tryfan though. The weather got too bad, and we had to turn back.

Currently trying to persuade my mates to go up there for a weekend of youth hosteling and walking :)

Great pics!! I'm now jealous :)

In the York Uni outdoor society we climbed snowdon mid feb. It was insane!! There were guys in full crampons and ice axes turning back before the summit. However we made it, despite the wind (my face felt like it was sandblasted from the ice blown off of the snow by the wind). In hindsight we probably should not have gone right to the summit, but we all got back down in one piece. It was actually the most fun things I've ever done, and even overcame my chronic fear of heights.

Next term we are doing the 3 peaks :)

I hope you have a great time, and I hope the ice has melted a little more than when we went!

If you have thermals you can hire the boots and crampons. There is a great hiking/activity centre in Capel Curig. They will rent you a decent pair of Scarpa's and Crampons for just £10 for the day (better than paying in excess of £300 for them to keep!)

We stayed a night at the Youth hostel at the top of Nant francon valley. We camped outside and although this was £8.50 each it included use of the indoor facilities and a pitch ato pthat great view!. Would have been wussey to have spent the night in the hostel for an extra £5 though :D

 pictures CP. Glad to hear your made it home safe, Llanberis MRT has been very busy in the past few weeks.

Here's a view from Tryfan in better weather (the last time I was up there).

Just a few more pics :D

from what me and my bro remember there are 3 main ways up snowdon.

bearing in mind i am now 26 and my brother 24 we first did snowdon around 8 and 6 respectively.

theres the miners pass, nice and steep / long at the end.

the miners pass which is no more than a hike up to the top although both steep and rocky.

then theres crib gock. nightmare.

good luck. try the miners first then experiment, especialy if you have average or less hiking experience.

good boots are essential

A friendly tip for your photos. Cameras under-expose for snow so if you have Photoshop load them in and press shift+ctrl+l. Its the auto levels adjuster. It makes the photos brighter basically.

I'd much rather stay in a tent. It's what I'm used to. However, I think the lure of a warm hostel in betws-y-coed, with nearby pubs just might swing it with my mates.

Ah thats good, thanks! :)

I should really try learning more post editing with Photoshop. Any guides in the photography about it?

You've inspired me there Captain Planet. On a clear day I can see Snowdonia from the beach by my house, it really is only a short drive. Only problem is none of my mates would ever consider a trek through the hills like that. Don't know what it is but there is just something about mountains that is a little mysterious- they are only a hill, but it is as though they have an aura of somesort.

First experience I had of this was of Mount Teide in Tenereife as a kid on a family holiday visiting my uncle. We got up to near the top via cable car and then walked the final bit. The views were astounding.

Your pics are great mate. In terms of Photoshop I tend to avoid using the auto levels command and just do it myself. Best way to do it is to use the levels and the curves adjustments and just make it look like how you remember it to be.

I once climbed Thorpe Cloud near Ashbourne, Derbyshire in my posh work shoes once. Not good, hurt my ankles on the way down. ;)

I did it in full bike gear and bike boots about 3 months back, didnt slip once and it was VERY muddy/wet. God knows what posessed us, we even climbed up the steepest part just as you cross the river and up the tracka bit, we didnt realise that it you carried on walking straight it pretty much took you top the top :D

Well done for climbing snowdon, it looks a bit harsh up there!

Of course Snowdon was a good accomplishment for a novice climber like me but with more experience and practice I hope to take on a real challenge in the near future; a colleague of mine climbed Mount Blanc 3 or 4 months back, at 4807m its over 4 times higher than Snowdon and in much more extreme conditions. One day sooon I'll be up there :)
