Hiper PSU

If you want a PSU with the same level of power (or better) and same price then consider the Antec NeoHE 430w (32A 12v). There may be others around that price range too if you look carefully.

Ignore the 580w rating on the Hiper. Comparable PSUs are in the 430-500w range, assuming a good brand (Tagan, Enermax, Antec) and that you use an up to date PC.

i use OCZ PSUs, have had a few, there all brilliant, rock solid stable, EXCELLENT build quality, warranty with OCZ, more or less silent, never heard of any OCZ power supplies biting the dust personally, seasonic are over-rated, OCZ FOR THE WIN!

agreed, love my OCZ over my busted Hiper

Surge Protector extensions are a good purchase :)

Are you talking about surge protector plug sockets or are there ones you can fit to protect the other components in event of psu failure?

{snip}...and i can not really afford any of the others that are the same approx wattage, as i am slightly over budget (£270 over) on the new system i am getting{snip}
Don't skimp on a PSU! (IMO) its the most important component of a build. Just remember you don't need crazy xxxWatts, e.g. a 450W PSU is even good enough for a 8800GTX based system!

What's your specs?

Over budget or not I don't think compromising on the PSU is a good idea, not with the hardware you'll be plugging into it.

i was planning on these

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM £93.99
(£110.44) £93.99
(£110.44)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £99.99
(£117.49) £99.99
(£117.49)
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £114.99
(£135.11) £114.99
(£135.11)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) £13.99
(£16.44) £13.99
(£16.44)
Western Digital Caviar RE 250GB 2500YS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £48.99
(£57.56) £48.99
(£57.56)

these will go in my thermaltake xaser case (5 fans) with 2 more sata harddrives and a dvd writer and dvd rom drive.

I will be overclocking.

the power calculator i checked out said i'd need 508w which is why i was considering the hiper 580 non modular

That's a nice setup ;) But how did you manage 508Ws? With above details & 100% TDP, (unnecessary) 15% Surge Compensation & 20% Capacitor Aging, only managed 377W

Anyway, any of these will do:
*Modular

Haven't got the link at work, possibly got an option messed up somehow.

Thought it seemed high! but with lots of post saying about how high W psu's are needed i figured it was just the new tech was more power hungry.

would this be slightly more future proof ? i.e. if at a later date i wanted to add another x1950 pro

Enermax Liberty 500W ELT500AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

£59.99
£70.49 inc VAT

For that then you need to stretch for a PSU in the 600W range :) Look at it as owning a 'luxury' car, i.e. don't/can't do it nor run it cheap :D
