Hey guys... my friend says Hiper Type-R 580W are good power supplies... what do you guys think?

There has been a thread on here recently about reliability issues with this PSU.
My very first one was DOA - however I appreciate these things happen.
About two weeks ago my PC was left plugged in but not switched on.
Loud noise from the computer room, PSU had totally blown (nothing would power up).
A friend of mine also saw his fail about a week ago - both his and mine were less than a year old.

I'm sure that there will be plenty of people who will report them as fine.
As I've seen three, one DOA and two dead within a year I have to say I'm less than impressed.

My current Corsair PSU certainly feels more "quality".

I've only ever heard bad things to be honest; exploding power supplies are NEVER fun.

I've got a 600w OCZ gamexstream and i think its fantastic, could be a little bit quieter but i think thats probably asking a lot of it.

What PSU rating would you recommend with a GTX + a E6600 overclocked?

A 520w Corsair would be absolutely fine for that. Hiper aren't necessarily terrible but they do appear to have had some reliability issues.

As a rough approximation of how good a PSU is, the greater the weight the better the quality is, this comes from using higher quality parts. Not infallible as a method to ascertain how good a PSU is but a reasonable comparison tool normally.

Built my mates pc with the hiper and is running fine, been about 8 months now.

The Corsair 520W seems to be the PSU of choice though.

I got myself one a while ago as i needed a new PSU, wasn't on these forums so wasnt aware of the hazards of buying one. A friend recommended and i acted on it mainly due to price as well as trusting the bugger. Had it about 6months and havent had a problem yet, but this rig is soon to become my second and therefore usuage would be a lot less which has me worrying less. If i was staying with this rig for more than 3 months, i would buy a corsair.

Too many people have had problems for it to be a mad coincidence, do yourself a favour and go with a corsair or antec.

I had the Hiper Type R modular and it was a fantastic PSU. (although this was alittle while ago now).

I had no reliability issues and it had no issues running either a dual 7800GTX / OC 4000+ setup or a X1800XT OC X2 3800+ setup.

However like I have said I had this psu quite a while ago and the model out now may be slightly different.

Yeh, it seems Hiper's arent so reliable anymore.
But Corsair is a favourite, and wins me over too.
Get the Corsair HX 520W, you will never look back :)

Thank's for the replies guys... may grab myself another Corsair 620w in that case.

my hiper is working fine, there has been a lot that died but i reckon it was just a bad batch, most of them are working fine, i reckon only 1% of their psu's were affected

mine hiper is 15+ months and hasnt missed a beat tbh and has been used and abused

I now have a rather disturbing image in my mind.

How exactly does one go about abusing a PSU?

Is this just a verbal thing or are yoghurt and wet celery involved?

My one was absolutely perfect for about 14 months, then it failed. Got an RMA on it hough and they were pretty good with it all. Got an OCZ modstream 450W now, no probs so far...
