Hiring a kilt...

I would recommend getting it fitted, as it won't look right if it's the wrong size and it'll also give you an oppurtunity to learn how to wear it.

Wish I'd bought a kilt when I was single, honestly at weddings it's always a hit with the ladies.

OP - Jokester is right, it's not just the shoes, getting it to sit properly on you can be a tad fiddly the first few times so a couple of practices can help a ton. After tha it's just like wearing a suit, a doddle to put on :)

Is there any likelyhood of me being able to hire one in Scotland and getting it send down here? I guess the main issue would be not being able to try the stuff on first and cost of postage?

You could certainly hire it in Scotland but if you're getting it sent down then you've probably eaten up any savings you made from hiring it there. The only reason I did it was that I had mates travelling down anyway plus I had a pretty fair idea about the size needed.

The kilt itself should come down to the middle of your kneecap ideally so fitting is advisable.

I have a kilt of the Hamilton (Ancient Dress) tartan, like this:

Only this would be the "Modern" version, the "Ancient" would appear slightly "faded"...was my Dad's...

Definitely this. It's surprising the amount of people who get kilts that are way too long and it looks so silly. A kilt should be the length that if you kneel down the kilt edge just touches the floor
