Hey Guys,
Just wanted to know if theres any HIS ice q 7970 owners out there and if so do you get the buzzing sound that I have had with my last couple of them? Reading up on it,it seems that its something to do with the PWM design which, whilst being effective, buzzes like hell. I want to know if this go's away with time because if it does not, mine is getting returned and that's me done with HIS.

I know this is trivial but I spent ages getting my set up as quiet as possible and its even more noticeable because of that fact!

Hey,

Its most likely "coil whine" a lot 7970's have it. To the best of my understanding its when electricity passes through the coils on the card and causes them to vibrate causing the buzzing noise you are most likely hearing.

Their are certain things people have done to quiet it down, like hot glue on the coils reduces the vibration. But personally I wouldn't do that.

Also sometimes it can go away on its own after a good "run in". I'd just leave it be as i'm pretty sure it doesn't cause any harm. But i'm sure someone who knows more will be a long and can give you a bit more/better advice?

Cheers man. I really want to know its a problem with all the ice q 7970 cards as i've had it before but i've now had 3 of the same card with it and if this is the case then i'm done with them. Its louder than I have ever heard it before.

I'm not 100% sure if its an IceQ 7970 specific issue. But I have heard quite a few people saying their 7970's have coil whine.

If its ridiculously loud then I would RMA the card/s. Maybe try a brand with a custom PCB, maybe the coil might be spaced more or of a higher quality thus reducing vibration.

Like I say i'm not a 100% sure, just thinking logically out aloud ( which could be wrong :) ).

Yeah it sounds like coilwhine, to make sure you could record it and upload via youtube?

People say leaving the card at 100% usage over night can fix it.

But 9/10 it wont go away, id return it now if its under 14 days old as you cant RMA for coilwhine.

Yeah, thanks guys. I have already spoken to Bailey and its sorted. I was going to risk it but I am no happy with it and as well as the buzzing the fans are actually louder than my Gigabyte windforce! Looks like its see you later time for the HIS :(

Lol man i hate noise too, my monitor is playing up atm im getting white noise from it when im browsing, i dunno how to fix it :\

Its perfectly silent when gaming but when i browse it has a high pitched noise :\

I own a HIS card and I get the buzzing, but, only on loading screens where the frame rate isn't capped, like on Hitman Absolution.

The other 7970 I owned which wasn't a HIS card was far worse in this respect.

My friend has a Gigabyte 7950 Windforce and it has exactly the same issue.

To be honest it seems like its present on most cards to a certain degree, and as mine only occurs on certain games and for a few seconds I just live with it.

I have had 3 Gigabyte WF 7970s and an XFX ref model this gen and none have had it. I can live with coil whine but this is a loud buzzing and when I have spent quite a bit on silent parts I am not very forgiving of it.

ive found a good cure of coil whine is to overclock and run benchmarks back to back for a while - it punishes the coil into submission :D

So I have heard but there is always the chance it will not work. I have gone ahead and bought another Gigabyte WF instead. I really wanted the HIS but I have had 3 now that I have been unhappy with and they are a lot louder than I thought they would be considering they talk about quiet and cool.

+1

Overclock as hard as you can and then some and it disappears before you know it (and you have some very good scores in the bench threads) :D

I had coil whine on my Gigabyte 7950 when it came a few weeks back and that was annoying as hell.

I benched her until she shut the hell up :D

Took a few days but it's quiet now. May not work for everyone though.

All 3 of my cards had it, after I raped and abused them, they quiet down, and my rig is pretty silent.

I do hear it slightly if I load all the GPU's to full load. but I also hear coil whine when I do a speedtest on my internet connection, So I think it's to do with the motherboard my self. To back that up, you get it much much less with AMD based motherboards ;)
