Hissing sound when on some games

The sound is defiantly coming out of the speakers. If I turn the gain up on the back of the KRK's it boosts the hissing sound. VSYNC does reduce it but its still there and still noticeable to me. I've been testing it with Dirt 3 where it is very noticeable.

from what wazza300 advised and a few things I managed to find last night I think it is an RFI issue we're getting.

So far the most common answers I've found are either purchasing a HumX which should eliminate ground loop or to get some shielded balanced RCA cables but some people have said they can affect the sound clarity.

Here's some threads going a bit more in depth

although it doesn't go into why our gfx are only causing this in games. Do you get a quiet but high pitched whine during general use? Mainly when moving cursor? and out of curiosity what gfx are you running?

I don't get that with a 7970 and a 7850,5770

although ive experienced it on an x58 board, when scrolling the mouse wheel or web page it will screech slightly, this was through headphones though

Just discovered when I turn the gain all the way up (from -30db to +6db) it does give a low buzzing sound and when I move the pointer around intensifies and also gives a high pitches whine noise. In games it is a lot more noticeable for some reason. As its set at -30db you can't hear anything unless a game is launched.

The graphics is an EVGA GTX 670 FTW.

Curiously, I too have been investigating this today. As above, I get an interference like coil whine from speakers/headphones when gaming, but there is no audible noise coming from the PC itself. Lower FPS do seem to lessen it, but not cure it. Changing from onboard sound to an Asus Xonar DG PCI made no difference either.

Would a ground loop noise isolator like this help, or even going as far as an external soundcard?

That does sound like a ground loop. I had to get a pair of isolator transformers to stop mine whining and buzzing. (2 amps interlinked to the pc, one via analogue and the other via coax) Switching over to balanced connections will stop it too. (RCA connections are not balanced, only XLR and correctly wired TRS connections are) You can get un-balanced to balanced converters but they will cost more than a good isolation transformer and a passive converter is just an isolation transformer wired up differently.

An XLR connection isn't necessarily balanced as they can be wired up as unbalanced. (linking cold and shield together) The 1/4" connector will be TRS, (tip-ring-sleeve meaning 3 connections) but this can also be wired up as unbalanced.

In your case though, the specs on the presonus site suggest that the output is 1/4" TRS balanced which shouldn't have any earth loop issues. It doesn't matter whether you go TRS-TRS or TRS-XLR, just make sure you keep the RCA connections unplugged.

if anything at least I've learnt a bit about cables from this problem :P

and I don't have any RCA connections connected to the firestudio just the 2 1/4" and firewire to draw power/audio. Same with the KRKs just the XLR & kettle cables for them

do you know if a ferrite core would help at all? as I have one that came with my TV
