hit and run!

Was coming home this morning when i was hit by a moped! :(

He wasnt the owner of the bike and scarpered from the scene before the police arrived

I have his plate and the police have all of the mopeds details but cannot verify who was riding the bike :(

so im left with:

hrm... surely the owner should be forced to disclose the rider, as with speeding offences, or shell out from their insurance? Get your insurance company onto it asap!
 
If someone steals your car and then does damage to other cars I'm pretty sure that your insurance has to pay out, so this is probably similar.
 
it's unclear from what you've said whether the moped owner is claiming it has been stolen, or it just wasnt him riding it
 
if it's stolen the matter of whose insurance covers it is murky, as came up in a previous thread, whereas if it's someone else riding but covered on the insurance then it's not a problem and the claim goes straight through, equally if the owner has let someone not insured use the bike the blame falls to him i imagine
 
it was his friends moped (so he claimed) the police have rung the registered keeper who said he wasnt riding it. i would've thought the owner would've said something if it had been stolen.

I dont really want to have to payout for the damage as it will be a lot :(

Thats the cops' job. They should visit the registered keeper and see if he is still the owner. If not, who did he sell it to ? Why didn't he inform the DVLA ? If he is still the keeper, who was using it ? who did he lend it to ? Is it stolen ? that type of thing.

Hopefully there is a trail for them to follow to catch the rider. Good luck though. :)

Well, the insurance company said that i could still be in the wrong as i was turning from a major onto a minor. but i stopped.. he couldnt so was doing an uber speed

he wasnt the owner so didnt have insurance and he fled from the scene
and his front tyre was bald
and ive got witnesses

the police have said there can't be a charge against me of careless driving too.

could i still be stung by the insurance? im only tpft, but i want to claim off the other guys insurance. will this effect my premium? :(
 
unlucky mate, that looks like the rider of the moped hurt himself though, you can always console yourself with that!

i have the oil cap, so he can't get far :p

it was completely smashed tbh bits everywhere. glad to be in a 0.8tonne car than a few kgs worth of moped
