Bah, what is it with some people not looking where they are going or not showing caution?

At the end of last week i was cycling to work down a bus lane when a car and a van overtook me in the bus lane. I though to myself - cheeky ghet's, they got to a roundabout so i went up on the the pavement, overtook them both and sat infront of the car (Green Rover 216) the traffic moved a bit an the boy tried to overtake me when there was clearly no room. I shuffled about on my bike a bit, his car hit my leg so in anger I punched his car..oww!
A few days ago I crossed a junction onto a road where a slip road was joining. On the slip road was a parent who just dropped off his child. he looked STRAIGHT PAST ME! then started moving. I slowed down as i got to him and he hit my back tyre. 1" more and he would have knocked me off! I shouted some profanity and carried on!

A couple of guys at work have been knocked down in recent months. 1 incident where the driver originally accepted liability is now saying it was the cyclist's fault. Arrgh!

the Other case was with a German guy I used to work with, he went over the bonnet of a car, split his leg open (real nasty gash) and said "Nah I am fine, it ist nothingz" and cycled home! Mad!

Cyclists have the right of way!

The attitude of some peope in cars towards cyclists really gets up my nose!

I had to get this off my chest!

My memory of the highway code is hazy (I passed my test several years ago), but aren't cyclists subject to pretty much the same road rules as a car when on the roads?

*Hands you a flame retardant jacket.

You don't exactly sound like a very considerate cyclist (I cycle and I do not drive) but the problem on the roads is that Cyclists think they should have right of way and own the highways!!! It's just not correct, Cyclists should always make sure they are able to easily let traffic past and to stay out of harms way so to speak.

You know what, sorry to sound harsh but it's people with your attitude that cause most of the crashes and incidents! There are a lot of cyclists, myself included who tend to consider themselves guests on the roads, guets to vehicles.

When im out on my bike i treat every car driver as if he is trying to kill me, being a cyclist makes me a better driver, in 20 years ive never run anybody over and only had a couple of crashes (non my fault)

I know how you feel. I've been pretty lucky, and maybe it's because I don't ride to work (anymore), but I've only had a few run ins with dopey drivers. One time I was pushed sideways into the pavement by the wheel of a BMW which had pulled out of an NCP car park. Unfortunately, I was so bemused by what'd just happened I never swore, gesticulated or smacked the wing mirror. I just stopped and had a completely dumbfounded look on my face. The driver probably thought I was a tad retarded, so just waved as means of apology and carried on.

He probably didn't see me, especially with me wearing my bright yellow t-shirt.

Something I was told by my driving instructor was to give a cyclist the same amount of room when passing as you wold a car, I always do this, normaly waiting till theres a gap in the oncoming traffic depending on how wide the road is, but everyone else seems happy to breeze past at a foot away or less.

I'm pretty sure there was a law recently past that gives cyclist the right of way, pedestrians come first.

I consider myself safe and polite when cycling on the road. I signal to turn, have adequate lights and helmet. I even move out of the way for buses and taxi's in the Bus lane. So I would not say that I have an attitude at all.

The majority of car drivers don't have any regard for other people at all what ever the situation, be it another car driver an motor/cyclist or pedestrian.

everyday (at least twice a day) i cross a zebra crossing near my home, i usually have my baby in a push chair so i'm very cautious when crossing, 99% of the time vechicles of any sort on the road do not stop even when they see me standing waiting to cross.

Now i don't know if i'm out of date now, but i thought it was a legal requirement under the highway code to stop at a zebra crossing if someone is waiting to cross. I know it's not the case in other countries but i was sure it was in the UK.

I have in my mind to go buy a cheap second hand pushchair and then when i'm standing at the crossing and i can see that the car has no intention of stopping i just push it out in front of them!!

you want equal rights on the road, then go pay tax and insurance :)

and yes if you get knocked off while trying to filter through moving traffic, you do get what's deserved :)

it still is, and if there's enough complaints to local council about lack of stopping, chances are, council will upgrade it to full traffic light setup...

Im not that restrained, i always give chase and its surprising how appologetic people are when i open their car door and ask them if they fancy a chat about their driving.
I was cycling down a street once when a lad in a suit stepped out in front of me from between two cars cradling a substantial amount of lunchtime foodstuffs. He didnt see me but i had about 2 seconds to adopt the crash position before we met, i was only doing 10-15MPH but it was enough to send him to the floor and £20 worth of sandwitches in all other directions.
I raced to him and grabbed him by his mayonaisse splattered lapels.
We discussed the issue and both agreed that my view was the right one.
Luckily my Kona was unhurt but this lads suit was a right mess.

that doesn't hold up. Road tax is there to pay for the damage caused by the multi ton cars causing damage to the road / causing pollution.....a bike causes negligible damage to the road nor any pollution, so why should they pay? Insurance is different for every person (in fact road tax is to some extent) so do you treat a smaller engined car that is in a lower tax bracket / costs less to insure like it has less right to be on the road just because they pay less than you?

It's legal for bikes / motorbikes to filter, and i personally see absolutely no problem in it. If you pull out on somone who is filtering, it's your fault for not being observant enough to notice them.

and before you try having a go at me, i drive considerably more than i cycle, so it's not a biased viewpoint ;)

Tom.

Cyclists have a similar rough deal to motorcyclists, they filter through traffic, they pay tax etc...it's part of the pirks of being on 2 wheels. We don't take up much room and we won't obstruct or delay a car/van etc.. in there journey, so show some respect!

I have cycled through a red light penty of times when it's a green man! Cyclist's are allowed to do this if done in a safe maner. How many car's have followed me through a red light? A few!

I have heard a few times that people should ride a bike (motor and pedal) before they get in a car to be more aware of thier surroundings.

Road laws are road laws, bike, car or lorry. Ive been stopped for speeding on my mountainbike (34mph) and was given a light hearted telling off by the lovely men and woman of the Essex Police Force.

Since when? You pay no road tax and you pay no insurance either and you get the same rules as other road users.

For your reference. Too many cyclists think they are superior to other road users. The same rules apply yet cyclists break them on a frequent basis.

Just recently, I saw a cyclist get knocked off his bike for breaking the rules. He went from road to pavement as cars were stopping at a zebra crossing to let someone cross. The cyclist then proceeded to cross the red light further ahead. It wasn't a good sight to see a cyclist get clipped by a police vehicle on an emergency call when the lights were red for the cyclist but he thought he could go through them anyway. Any faster and I'm sure it'll be a direct hit with the police car. No sympathies tbh.

Some cyclists are fine, and I give them room when overtaking.

Others are very dumb and seem to think they don't occupy any space or give way. A common one is on small roundabouts. Quite often a cyclist will see a car joining the roundabout, yet will still join themselves ahead, which means the car has to more or less stop on the roundabout, rather than waiting for it to pass. A car joining wouldn't do that. Then you have the regular no signals / general random veering/drifting around etc.
