Hit by car for second time in 2 weeks

Road laws are road laws, bike, car or lorry. Ive been stopped for speeding on my mountainbike (34mph) and was given a light hearted telling off by the lovely men and woman of the Essex Police Force.

Were you done for pedelling furiously? (i think that's the offense, and yes it's real*).

AFAIK cyclists are subject to pretty much the same rules of the road as a motorist, and have to give the same consideration to cars as cars do.
50: You MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.
Laws RTA 1988 sect 36, TSRGD reg 10(1)

I must get a new copy of the highway code, as I haven't read it for a couple of years.

*Apparently rarely used these days

The law is a bit g(r)ey in some areas. Cyclist's are not allowed on the pavement yet how often do i hear the "cycle on the pavement" arguement?

Cyclists are meant to abide by the same laws as cars but there are exceptions.

The laws are not clear but surely a civil attitude should prevail? Unfortunatly not all people are civil. This is why I know i am correct before I make a statement or have an arguement "cyclerage...grrr".

The number of times I've nearly been hit by cyclists going straight through a red light in London is ridiculous. The other day I was crossing and had to leap out of the way of a cyclist outside charring cross station and pull myself off the road by grabbing onto a lamppost. I frequently nearly get hit whilst going over zebra corssings too. One of these days I'll probably get hit by one and I will be even less happy.

The law is black and white. Because it's not always enforced doesn't make it open to interpretation.

Moreover, I don't think your attitude to other road users could be described as anything like civil.

Its sad you have been hit but cyclists dont go 30mph....Ive had to slam on so often because they move right out in tight spaces. They should be on the footpath imo.

And me lol, It's great on a bike tbh, I just love it. Most of the times I beat cars to my desination my riding sensibly. I thought that the lazer gun things didn't work on bikes so I overtook the police car that was driving through the estate...

Well some cyclists do deserve no sympathy as they are complete idiots when they are on the road! A lot of us are considerate though, I never do stupid stuff on my bike (well almost never!), I sometimes break the rules, fair enough, I only do it when its safe, though I shouldn't do it at all

Just yesterday I saw some guy cycling like a prat with a baby in a carrier thing with no lights and neither him nor the child had a helmet!!!!

From what I've read here: shouting profanity and punching cars, claiming that cyclists are entitled to special exemptions and that cyclists don't obstruct or hold up traffic.

The main problem, however, is that it doesn't seem like you accept that cyclists are at fault at least as much as motorists. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the impression and attitude I'm getting.

You sure? I know I do, its funny as everyone speeds because they can't bare the thought of staying behind me!

I gto caught behind one coming home from work this evening, now rather than moving out of my way this idiot sat rightin the middle of the road, a roade which you aren't meant to over take on either, so I had to sit there doing 10 mph waiting for this in considerate twit to get up the hill, would have been nice if he'd pulled over out the way but he didn't.

My biggest hate though is motor scooters riding my dumper, if I was to jump on my brakes suddenly I swear I'd have one embedded in my boot.

Ok I see your point. Let me clarify.

I have been cycling to work for over 6 years. I have had no serious accidents but only altercations. My shouting profanity and hitting the car (he hit me first miss) is my pent up anger at the lack of respect from drivers and it's my way of making people aware of when they are wrong! I don't want nor expect special circumstances, i respect car's road presence, like they should mine!

Cyclists have the right of way!

Do you pay for a road fund licence to use the road? No?

If I have to pay for a TV licence I shouldnt have to put up with freeloaders coming in off the street to watch TV should I?

Also, since you've got me started, when has it been legal or indeed sensible to hold up a main road with cyclists 3 abreast? They wonder why I want to run the little ******* down?

Theres a place for cycling and on the public highway isn't it...

;) :D

Some cyclists are idots. Thats ture. They take stupid risks and don't show consideration. I'm pretty sure Weescott is not one of them.

Its the bad things you remember. Ive had countless easy, pleasurable cycles to uni. Ive been hit by cars a couple of times. Both times was the car drivers fault.

This isnt to everyone, but for those complaining about cyclists, bear in mind:

  • My bike will do over 40mph
  • My bike will do over 40mph where you can't
  • Just because you haven't seen me doesn't mean i'm not there
  • Look, look, and look again when you pull out. Both of my accidents have been cars pulling out and me going into the side of them. That sucks. And it hurts.

I'm not putting the blame on anyone (aside the two so and so's who hit me) but everyone has a right to the roadspace.

Edit: I pay enough road tax for other vehicles that I should be allowed my 2 foot wide space to cycle.
