Are these drives known for failure?

I've just had another one go, making that two within 3 years. I booted into Linux as I can't get into my Windows install anymore and the S.M.A.R.T. report gives the same error my old drive had, an issue with the reallocated sector count.

Having to replace with a 1TB Seagate now as this thing only had a crummy one year warranty. My Western Digital which is 5 months newer has pristine S.M.A.R.T. results. :o The Hitachi had a powered on time of 2.7 years, the WD 2.2

Running RAID0 as well, so glad I decided to buy an external drive for Windows backup last year, I have a full system image I can restore from. I'd have been so butthurt if I lost all my music and saved games.

I think the Deathstar nickname applies to drives from before 2005 so unless your drives are that old it's not a general problem.

It just looks like you're unlucky.

Deathstar more applies to the IBM branded ones and moreso the 45gb 75GXP. Never really had any issue with them when Hitachi took over and sorted the design out properly.
