So a few weeks ago I recieved my Hitachi Deskstar 160GB SATA-II ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-022-HI )

The first one I recieved was broken and made a loud clicking noise when it powered up, and was not picked up in BIOS.

So I RMA'd it and was promptly sent a new one from ocuk.

Now when I put in this new drive it makes some very strange, quiet, sort of 'whining' noises when it boots up and this lasts for about 20 seconds or so.
When I try to boot off the drive it says 'NTLDR is missing'.

Now, someone informed me that this is something I can fix myself, but I am unsure how. So does anybody know how I can fix this issue? And if I attempt to fix it and it doesnt work, will ocuk still RMA it, or will it count as a void warranty?

Thanks.

NTLDR is a system file that resides on the root of the drive and required to boot the OS - being inacessable usually means either the filesystem is corrupt or unreadable or the MBR is incorrect - hopefully you just need to make the drive bootable with some partition tools, but it could be more serious...

What it means is that drive has been used before. A new drive cannot give you that error out of the packaging. Return it.

If you're off your head and you want to fix it instead of returning it, then start up your system from a Windows CD, go into recovery console and type "fixboot"+[Enter], then "fixmbr"+[Enter] and that should do it.

I used to get that sometimes when the boot order had changed in my bios and it was looking at the wrong drive :S
