Hello,

I am having a weird problem my Hard Drive Hitachi Deskstar T7K250. Whenever i plug in the Sata cable and turn on the computer, it just ticks and ticks and then when it gets to Detecting IDE Drives the computer freezes, if i unplug the hard drive it just carries on loading. When i get to the desktop, i plug the hd in and it clicks and just freezes computer, i unplug it and then it runs fine. Very weird.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like to me you have a very broken drive there :)

I presume your trying other Power Connectors to make sure its not that thats faulty. If you have, then id try for an RMA if its still in warranty.

if it wont load at all then you cant really do anything to get at the data on there :(

there are various tricks you can try to try and get at failing drives like the freezer trick etc but i've never tried any of these so cant say if they work.

have you tried different SATA ports/controllers btw? might be worth trying an external enclosure in case its a controller prob so get at the data

In your first post you mention you can get it to power up fine after a bit of fiddling, so there are still options open to you. The one i would suggest, and this depends on how important the data is on the HDD is buy an external Sata Enclosure or borrow one from a friend.

Put it in that, and connect it Externally, it has its own power supply so if its a dodgy power issue inside your PC that should illiminate that part of it. You can get these for around £20 on a well known auction site if you cant borrow one.

Other wise, you are going to need a 2nd drive that you can install an OS on and use the faulty one as a slave, fiddle about with as u mention in the first post and get the data off that one onto the 2nd drive.

Last, take the HDD round to a mates and do the above on his PC, of if your have a spare PC do it yerself...

PS: Ive heard of the HDD in a freezer thing, but never heard of it working!
