My friends laptop keeps failing to install windows so i think the hitachi drive is going faulty. Is there any windows based software that can test the drive for faults.

Right i did the hitachi fitness test and it told me the drive has failed. Now the laptop is out of warranty so my friend is going to give me some money to buy a new hard drive but i have a problem. The windows 7 recovery is on hidden partition on the faulty drive. I have connected the drive to my laptop via akasa hard drive dock and i can see the hidden windows 7 files but i can't clone the partition due to failed sectors. So i've downloaded a legal iso of windows 7 and planned to use the key on the bottom of the laptop but 2 sets of the code numbers are unrecognizable due to the label faded. Is there any way of getting the key from the hidden windows 7 files from the recovery partition.

Anyone make out this part of my friends key

There is a free program called keyfinder that can tell you the code installed in operating system.

Might not work with a retail disk though...good luck :)

x = no idea, maybe A or M?
y = I or 1 maybe?
z = 6 or G?

Thanks i'll try this. I can't use key finder as there is no installed operating system on c partition as i formatted when i tried to to a fresh install when the recovery did not work. The windows 7 recovery partition is there but the drive being faulty won't let me clone or copy the contents.

Run a data recovery to get the windows folder back? :)

Then you can get key. Should be easy to recover as its not really been over written with data.

not sure if it will help you at all but i used a program called magic jelly beans to find the key.
might help might not depends if it will read failed hdd
