Hitachi HDDs accessing while disconnected

Got a really bizarre issue here that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen before.

I've got 5 2Tb Hitachi disks which used to be in my media array, the array's been upgraded so I've got 5 spare disks to be used for backups etc. Now I've wiped and formatted the first three and they're all showing the same symptoms.

If I put them in the external dock thingy they're accessible fine and I can read and write from them no problem but whenever they're idle they start accessing yet nothing is showing in resource monitor, perfmon or anything else I can use. Strangely the accessing carries on even after a "safely remove hardware". Even more bizarrely I've just powered one up with no data connection back to the PC and it's accessing like crazy

So any ideas?

Out of interest, does the seeking stop after any length of time - maybe 10 minutes of seeking then it stops?

I have an external harddrive, which is also a 2TB Hitachi and it does exactly as you describe - I use the harddrive, during idle period it seems to seek for a while (never really timed how long for) then stops.

Which model harddrive is it? I'll need to check which model my external drive is, but I'm certain there is a firmware update which alleviate the problem, atlhough not entirely.

I've left the drives for hours and it's still been going on!

They're all HDS5C3020ALA632 / DS5SAD200, I think that's the 5K3000 series.
