Thanks so far.

is there a reason for not considering samsung drives? they are meant to be some of the quietest and I know from experience they are quick :)

Yep. They are quiet but the reviews seem to show they are slow in comparison to the three makes above.

An no Maxtors please :)

comeon someone say Seagate, ive just ordered one!
Don't worry, Seagates are the best of all drives, just not the fastest. All depends on usage really but tbh, I'd buy a seagate 9 times out of 10. I have a seagate storage drive, 4 hitachi sata-II 80GB drives in RAID0+1 and have a WD raptor. My sis has a WD 160GB and my parents a Seagate. All are good drives.

Hitachi is the best all round, seagate is the best reliability (most important in my eyes).

I never imagined that the Hitachi drives would be good for speed and quitness all in one. I was leaning towards other makes until I heard how good these were. Any type of Hitachi size drives best avoided, or are they all good no matter how big the storage size?

If you go for the 200mb or 250mb samsung spinpoints they are of a new series which is a lot faster. I believe they are the fastest, certainly beat the WDs (apart from raptors). I'm very happy with mine, getting another in fact. They are fast, very quiet and mine is only 20-25 C temps (in HD cage with 120mm amber blowing over them).

Personally i think they are the best drives on the market at the moment.

I was sure that they were great drives as well, and at one point I almost bought those other makes, good job someone has asked and brought out some interesting results. Any drives that beat Hitachi's range?

Now im all confused again, everyone is saying a different make is "the best" and "fastest" I just dont know which one to choose from really, and if I go for a 250gb drive I can go for pretty much anything. Its either:
1: Seagate, 2: Samsung, 3: Western digital or 4: Hitachi.

I have heard good things just on this thread about all of them, would be nice to hear conclusive proof on what beats everything else tho

samsung if you want quite and cool but not the fastest drive

seagate is good all round drive with very good reliablity

hitachi possibly the fastest drive seems to be getting very good press of late another good all rounder

wd respected drive quick as well

its a hard choice everyone is going to have the favourites which ever you go for im sure you wont be dissapointed

Looks like all the drives out there now are almost as good as eachother, just the same speeds but with different badges. Think I might go with Hitachi as the "head count" is more with them at the moment, without a poll to go by. Just have to wait until the drives come back into stock. Might also get an X-Fi while my machine is open...
