Hive or Nest?

Not sure on if the batteries run out, I would presume (and hope!) it supports the current schedule but it's worth googling

I have Hive and can confirm it does do this.

It emails you if the batteries are running low.

I've got a couple of smart plugs connected to the system - nice to have a couple of lights on in the house when it goes dark ready for you coming home from work etc. Also nice to set a random schedule for the lights if you go on holiday.

for me the Hive was the best option, can make pretty complicated schedules, easy self-install, relatively cheap and decent app.

I don't need a thermostat that knows when I'm home, I always have my phone on me so can put the heating on if I'm home outside of the usual times

:)

Hive does know when you're home through it's geofencing function - it can turn your heating off when you leave home and turn it back one when you start heading back.

With nest there are three options for On or Eco mode.

1. You leave the house with your phone - turns to Eco Mode
2. Your phone is uncontactable/out of the house and you walk past the thermostat - it turns the heating on/keeps it on.
3. You connect Protects to the system and any time you go past a Protect it ntokfies the system there is a presence in the house and keeps the heat on.

There may be more but they are they three I know about.

The Protects if installed will also call to the thermostat to turn the boiler off if any CO is detected.

Yup.

I believe the integrated cameras also work as sensors too for movement.

If system detects movement heating goes on to whatever you set thermostat too.

If system doesn't detect movement and you leave the house your phone sends a signal to the thermostat telling it to go into eco mode. You can have the app on as many phones as you like. So I left for work today but my wife is at home. So it told it I'm away but wife is there so heating didn't turn off or go into eco mode.

I'm thinking of adding a few smart plugs to mine, what are they like? I have a couple of D-Link smart plugs but they seem to be a bit flakey with regard to turning on/off with my IFTTT schedules and triggers. For most of my lights I'm using Hue, but a few of my lamps have bulbs not available for Hue.

Oh, and I take it from your post that you're no longer unemployed? Congrats. :)

Hive arrived yesterday and a good mate came and installed it for me as I am hopeless at this sort of thing :)

Looks smart and does the job perfectly.

My current thermostat/controller for my Vaillant Combi uses an outside sensor and an inside thermometer to control the heating being on or off based on a target temp. Recently the outside sensor has stopped working properly which causes the boiler to either not turn on or not turn off depending on what temp the thermostat registers last from the outside sensor before it "crashes".

Googling around suggests a replacement sensor would be £200 so I am thinking of going Nest or Hive. Nest looks the slightly better of the two from a function perspective but I understand it has to be powered by a USB cable rather than batteries like the Hive is and I want to mount the unit on the hallway wall where the current control unit is and there is no chance of me having an electrical supply, so I am edging towards going for the Hive.

Currently the Hive can be had for £180 installed but installation looks to be at least a month wait, or the Nest for £270 installed by KnowHow or £200 and then sort a local installer (which I am guessing would be £70 at least anyway based on reports on how long it takes to install)

Any comments appreciated.

Nest can be powered by a USB cable or hard wired.

Mine is hard wired and you can hard wire it next to the heat link or where the old thermostat was.

So go for the NEST if you can.

I selected Tado and haven't regretted it. I will add, unless you are switching from one to the other, all modern heating controllers are amazing when compared to what came before.

I have just setup Tado to work with the Amazon Echo and I believe you can do the same with Nest. The Echo is in my kitchen and I just tell Alexa to set a manual termperature or return to auto which is nice. I believe Nest is much the same.

Tado have just released radiator TRVs which will bring zonal control which is great.

How does the geofencing work when there's more than one person in the house, can two people connect through the app?

Yes, each phone/device is registered as a user and geofencing can be enabled/disabled per device. Both my wife and I have our phones tracked via the app but the iPad has tracking disabled and is usually downstairs so useful if we want to make a changev (athough with the Echo this is a little redundant).

Households that don’t have an existing room thermostat can use the Extension Kit to set up a wireless connection to their heating system. The Extension Kit is available as an accessory to buy for £79

So.. it'd cost £280, which is double what Hive costs. I don't see how it's worth that. My worry with Tado is what happens if the company stop maintaining the apps. It does sound like the only one that handles geofencing properly (ie multiple users!)

Nest also geofences with multiple users? And works with Echo, IFTTT, Hue, WEMO, Smartthings etc.

Not trying to suggest its better than TADO but it does do those things.

How does the Nest geofencing work? Is it a simple when you are at home turn the heating on and when you are away turn the heating off?

With Tado the thermostat sets the temperature based on how far away you are from the house, with the aim being that as you get closer to home it'll begin upping the temperature so that it is warm when you walk back in the door.

It may well work like this for Nest, I'm not sure.

That's what it claims to do. Mine tells me how long it will take to get to temp and makes the calendar around both my phone and my gfs phone, what time we usually get home and so on.
