HL Alyx : No VR Mod

Shame, this game is one of the best VR games out there, it's distasteful to play it non VR. I know some people don't own a VR headset but still..

it could be many reasons like medcal or the motion sickness.
i suffr badly with Motion sicknes in some VR Titles and minor in others.

In my opinion it should be available in VR and none VR. As said above, medical reasons for some people. For me, I wouldn't get enough use to justify buying one as they are very expensive.

Yeah it works flawlessley and is really easy to set up. Takes some getting used to the controls but it runs really well.
Occasionally you get " stuck " but it's easy to correct you just hit the spectate button and you get free again.

Yeah I understand that, don't get me wrong. I just mean it's one of those games that needs to be played in VR.

They aren't that expensive now, you can pick up a used Rift S for around £100. I sold one on here a few months ago for £125. Quest 2 is still around £200-250 used. Rift S is well worth it though. Some even cheaper..

Sorry GlitterBalls, i honestly didnt mean it to sound like i was having ago.
i realise i didnt phrase my wording correctly, i appologies.

i do agree with you its a shame the VR compoent wont be used as it adds so much more to game play and imersion. so totatlly agree its such a disapointment people wont get the full expirence.

@mrk Think i read you were going to pick this up and play with a no-VR mod, do you know which one is best?
The Gen_2 dev team's mod appears to be the best one. Works just fine!

Specifically it's the launcher version that can install/update the mod: https://github.com/bfeber/HLA-NoVR-Launcher#installation-and-usage

You can then add -novr -vsync to the Alyx game in Steam properties and it will launch into the mod when launching directly in Steam. Just launch the launcher whenever there is a mod update and click the update button.

Works perfectly fine, game is fixed to 120fps though.

I'll be picking this up too at some point. Still need to finish HL2 though...:o.

I've got the rift set but thanks to where my pc is now I've no space so it'll be with the mod.

Just keep in mind that the main menu will appear glitchy at first but it's just flickering as you move the cursor about, still works. You should in there change teh performance preset to ultra, as it's high by default, or was for me. It said setting to ultra goes beyond recommended specs - To which I said "biznatch please" :D

To exit the game with the mod installed I enable the steam overlay and click exit game. By default the ESC button loads mod console or something which I don't understand, and the default main menu key which is M doesn't work for me, so I just set the settings on first launch, and exist exit the game via the steam overlay instead.

I have VR, but would sooner play it non vr, as in vr I play for an hour and I am ready to throw up, or in non vr, I could play it for hours

From reading your posts, it looks like both of you make the classic mistake, you try to push through the sick feeling. You keep playing, even after you start to get nauseous, because you think that will build up your VR legs. And you now mistakenly believe that VR makes you sick.

VR sickness is easy to get rid of. It just takes a little time. The cure is sort of counter intuitive too.

You see what you have done is train your brain to associate putting on a VR headset with getting VR sick. The trick with VR is that you stop playing when you start to feel sick. I know it doesn't sound like it will work, but it does. You put on the headset, play the game and the second you start to feel Nauseous you just take off the headset and go do something else until the sick feeling goes away completely. I can't stress this enough, you have to stop playing immediately. Do not try to push through and do not go back playing until every trace of nausea is gone.

After a while you will start to notice that you are spending longer and longer in VR before you have to take off the headset. Until eventually, you will be able to play most games without any problem. If you do come across a game that makes you feel sick, you repeat the process above.

This is proper way to build your VR legs. How long it takes depends on the person.

Thank you melmac
i tend to find it depend on the game, its not just a problem for me in VR but also FPS on flat screen.
i think a good example of a VR title i've tried on the Quest is Red Matter were the movement is to (for lack of a better word) Jerky

some games i dont have a problem with one day i have issues with the next.

given t can take a few hours to recover i tend to stop as soon as i get simptoms as the recovery isn worth "another 30mins" play time so to speak.

Just over half way through the game. Some glitches here and there especially if you ever use spectate mode. Ocasionally doors which are supposed to open don't and then you have to use the spectate mode to teleport through but generally a fun game
