HL Alyx : No VR Mod

20 hours long?! Ok so my 5hrs playtime so far is early days then :D

Yeah I didn't do much exploring either, just trying to complete each level as fast as I could. Did use YouTube every now and again for reference because some doors which were supposed to open would not, and I'd then have to teleport through them with the spectate mode

How does this run on older hardware?
I'd planned to play this in VR when it released, but my rig wasn't really up to it with decent visuals. Upgraded my CPU last year to a 5800x, but I'm still rocking a gtx 1080.

Depends what you mean by that.
I have DDR4 ram/Ryzen 5 3600 and a 3060ti fe and it ran perfectly from start to finish in the highest settings at 1440p

The min spec for the game in VR is a 1060. Don't think you'll have much trouble running it.

Yeah I understand that, don't get me wrong. I just mean it's one of those games that needs to be played in VR.
Why, tho?

Cockpit games are often said to be great applications for VR. But even those don't need to be played in VR.

What is it about Alyx that means it needs to be played in VR?

Without VR the game comes with a number of limitations, also loses most of its appeal by doing so. You can't use Alyx's signature gravity gloves, for instance, while the general feel of the game outside virtual reality goes against everything Valve's emphasis on tactility and immersion built specifically for that format.

If you apply that logic, then you could say that all racing games, flying games, need to be played in VR. Anything that supports VR needs to be played in VR.

I guess we'll just have to disagree about that.
well they do need to played in VR to get the utmost out of the immersion those games offer. doesn't mean they can't be played and enjoyed in non-vr. it's akin to saying, a band new cutting edge AAA game (non-vr) needs a cutting edge gpu to get the best out of it. but that doesn't mean it can't be played on other gpu's, it'll just be a slightly lesser (graphically) experience.

OK, it's more than just immersion, then.

I remain super salty that Valve chose to make a HL game VR-only. The bar stewards. They make us wait years for the next instalment, and they go and pull a stunt like that :p

Personally I can't stand VR, so this thread interested me.

VR certainly adds a lot to those cockpit types of games like racers and flight sims. I'm all for being able to play vr games on a flat screen if that's the way these things are ported. Porting the other way generally makes for a far worse VR experience though, outside of those already seated games.
That's not strictly true, but often the case.
If I can get my vr space back I'll play this as intended, otherwise I've waited this long so I can probably wait for the third coming.

Thanks for the headsup on this, I have a oculus quest but little space to use it from close proximity to my PC.

This might convince me to play through this.

You can play the game sitting in you're chair. I've not come across a single FPS title in VR that can't be played that way. As long as you've a foot of fresh air in front of you for some gun play and a limited throwing action, life is good.

No, he isn't saying that at all. You don't need to play those games in VR, but they are much better when you play them in VR. It's like you can play soccer on the street using two jackets as goalposts and a rubbish plastic ball. But it's a far greater experience to play on a proper pitch with good goals and proper ball. However, that analogy doesn't do any justice to the difference between playing games like Half Life Alyx and Skyrim on a monitor versus been playing them in VR. A more accurate analogy would be it's like playing subbuteo versus playing real soccer.
