So I finally started playing on Half Life 2: Episode 1 an hour ago (I had already beaten Half Life 2 a long time ago) after seeing all the buzz surrounding Episode 2 and the improvements it brings to the Source Engine.

It's a horrible, boring shocker of a game :/ You start with what was argubly the worst bit of Half Life 2; with a blue mavity gun in the citadel, fighting your way back to the core, then out again. Just when I thought it couldn't be worse, the game thought it was a good idea to thrust you through dark areas with a flashlight that lasts as long as a cat's fart.

I finally managed to get to the surface, but I really don't think I'll be playing this game again. The gameplay itself has not evolved or even remotely improved on itself since the original Half Life 2. Bah.

I really enjoyed it.

Thought the darkness parts were really atmospheric and getting to the surface was a nice change in gameplay.

I didn't hate the beginning quite as much as you, but it got on my nerves a bit. I found the game opened up further down the line, it started to feel more like a real game.

I would encourage you to keep playing a while longer, I found the surface to be the better act.

I quite liked the dark flashlight scenes, it was about the AI and having to work together.

It's an awesome game. I'm really looking forward to EP2. It was a little short but I felt the gameplay made up for it.

I hated having to drag Alex around everywhere with me as she just gets in the way in tight spaces and constantly talks rubbish.

I also thought the collision detection was worse than in HL2 as felt that I kept getting stuck on bits of scenery as I was walking around them.

The lack of variation in the locations also really spoiled it for me.

It was worth £10 though. :)

It must have been boring because i completed it but can not remember most of it.
all i do remember is at the end i thought here we go stage 2 of the game but it was the end.

You've obviously never met my cat!

V1N.

3 hours is pretty good for something that cost 1/3rd of the cost of a normal game. Most seems to last about 9 hours these days.

I loved the gameplay myself, but thats a preference thing. The same with the dialogue. I thought that Alex's lines and body language were pretty damn excellent, for a game. Especially when you are in the carriage with the stalkers, she sounds really freaked, completely believable rather than the usual gaming "Oh look at those things, ugly arn't they.".

I personally think we're being royally screwed with content like this. We pay over the odds for a fraction of a game that simply continues (albiet very briefly) a story we were already in. They don't even have to cover postage or packaging design if you just download it, making even more for less.

I found it disappointingly short and uninvolving as well, no notable battles or interesting bits, just more of the same.

Episode two looks set to change some of that but time will tell!

I really enjoyed Episode 1 the first time I played it, although it did get a little frustrating going through the Citadel again.
Also love the commentary which gave me an excuse to play through again and find out how they put it all together. Thought it was excellent finding out how much thought goes into some of the smallest things.

the most exciting part of the game was when you jump on the train and are being chased as its quite nerve racking and then............. it ends - the citadel bits are weird and dull. EP2 should be better i hope
