HL2 Episode 3

Wikipedia said:
Half-Life 2: Episode Three is the third and final installment in the series of episodic expansions.[30] It is planned as the last episode in the story arc, although not necessarily the end of the Half-Life franchise.[31] No release date or other details have been announced, though some concept art has surfaced.[32][33]

It's been so long now, it's kind of to the point where the source engine is probably not capable of producing graphics as detailed as they would want for this game, so perhaps they're planning a large redesign or upgrade for the future and a possibly HL3 if such a thing ever emerges.

From my perspective, graphics are irrelevant when it comes to this series of games; they're all about the gameplay which is way more than good enough to compensate for the less than cutting edge visuals.

Was there a teaser trailer about the net not so long ago or am I thinking about something else?

If that 2010 release date is half accurate then there must be some sort of announcement soon.

I reckon the Source engine will be able to keep up with today's games no worries, the whole point of the engine is that it's scalable and given previous updates and how TF2 looks at full tilt I don't think it'll be too much of a problem to get another HL episode out of it.

Like others, I do wish Doug Lombardi would get his finger out and get something in the public domain. HL is approaching abandonware lol.

Good things come to those who wait. It's far too soon to call it vapourware or abandonware or whatever. Valve do tend to take their good sweet time with releasing games.

Just as long as it's not 4-8hrs long like Ep 1 & 2. Then I'll be a bit pee'd at having to wait ages for it, even if it is epic :p

Sat down with Ep2 last Saturday and finished it in one sitting, much better than Ep1 but still dissapointing length wise.

Valve might produce top notch games but they also tend to screw you over with pricing vs length of game. still cant wait for Ep3 though.

I still class HL2 as the best and worst game of the year, great game, crap ending and totaly dissapointed in the end product not following the tech demos. And the AI for team mates sucked. I wanted a Tentical beast, I wanted the tram, I also wanted the strider neer the Cinema with the resistance shouting "STRIDER". shame.

Another thing that anoyed my with HL2 was the fact that Striders and the flying things (cant remember their name) required exactly 3 rocket hits and nothing else would touch them. How about hitting them in the legs with cars? Grrrr, felt so Console like.

But, Ravenholm still ranks as the best level to any game for me, utterly brilliant.

I think you've missed the point of Episodic content. More games of shorter length, at lower prices, released closer together.

That said, Valve missed the third point. ;)

However, I've a feeling just the amount of story to fit into the third episode will mean it has to be longer. I can't see everything being wrapped up neatly without more time spent on it.

Gawd dammit. Every time someone makes an "Episode 3" thread I think "Finally, please let this be the teaser trailer".

Uninformative thread titles FTL.

That is not the case. They may add some spangly new effects (Like Ep2 getting dynamic shadows), but Valve are perfectly happy with Source, as am I. Fantastic engine, coupled with Valves astonishing art design = yum.

Hopefully they are creating the source engine 2.

I suspect we'll see that after Ep 3, and this story arc are done and dusted. Maybe in time for HL3. :p

I've got to agree, there's more than enough life in the engine for another Episode. :)

I don't disagree, there is plenty of life left in the source engine, as I said, its more about the gameplay. I was just speculating why it could have been such a long time between releases, but I suppose this is normal. Sure, they'll probably add new effects etc as they have done already, but don't forget the age of it now, it could be time they're thinking about or working on its replacement. Just a thought. If it means it gets into my hands faster, I couldn't care less about the gfx of ep3, those of even hl2 are perfectly adequate for a good game.

I think someone should just make a mod of their version of episode 3. Then again someone probably has.

I've been hoping that they just skip ep 3 and make it Half life 3 and carry on with the story. New engine and all :)

I've found their pricing very good compared to other games. TF2 was reasonably priced and I must have gotten 500 hours out of it! So far.

Also have tremendously enjoyed replaying valve SP titles. Planning to replay HL, HL2, Ep1 and 2 before Ep 3.

Might even do Opposing Force again, but not Blue Shift.
