Hey, is it as simple backing up saved games as it was with the original HL?

Ie copy the saved games then chuck them back into the folder once you have installed again?

Thanks

:)

Pretty much.

Though I do recommend backing up your entire SteamApps folder, just so you don't need to redownload everything.

There is a folder somewhere, check Steam\steamapps\username\half-life2\
If you do end up losing save games, you can always unlock chapters by using the unlock chapters command and start from there.

Right, now you say copy the whole SteamApp folder?

I have tried this before and after it still wanted to update steam, and at the time I didn’t have net access. (have now though)

So if I copy the SteamApp folder when I copy it back over after install Steam should just work like it was before?

Does the steamapp folder include the saved games or will I have to grab them separate?

Sorry for the noob questions guys, but need to format for Vista and don’t want to lose my game progress (or have to faff about with steam much again)

cheers guys

I'm not sure on the savegames but instead of copying the whole steamapps folder you could open up steam, click on file and then on backup game data. It's really simple and splits up the files into CD/DVD size files :)

The SteamApps folder has everything in it, all game content files and all game configs and settings. If you want to back up just the save games, use the folder I posted above, else, if you want to back up all your games as well, then back up the SteamApps folder. If you want to back up all your settings etc, but don't want to back up your game files, simply back up the folder with your Steam usersname found in the SteamApps folder. You can use the backup system, but that will only back up your game files, and not the game saves and settings I don't think.

You will always need the internet to initially set up Steam and allow your backed up games to get re-activated.

As you're formatting for Vista, I suggest:

Backup SteamApps folder

Do all your Vista install stuff

Install Steam.
Log out of and exit Steam.
Copy SteamApps folder to Steam folder.
Delete clientregistry.blob file found in \Steam\
Start Steam and log in.
Load Half-Life 2, it may or may not want to download a couple of kb update, but it should work fine.

You could do it that way also, but again I'm not sure if it would copy the saves. My understanding is it just backs up the GCF files.

Biohazard - Even if you copied the whole SteamApps folder (which would include saves), you will still likely have to re-authenticate with Steam when you re-install. Think about it, if you didn't, you could in theory distribute your Steam install to anyone and their dog, giving them your Steam library for free.

EDIT - Bah, beaten! ;)
