HL2 vs Far Cry What's the Better

FarCry, but only just.

I think the visuals in both games were truly awesome but i found FarCry to feel more immersive. I guess it was because it was the only pc game that i had at the time and i had just built my new rig so it was all that i was doing on the pc. With HL2, however, i had bought it along with a load of other games and so ended up not getting into it as much as i ended up taking breaks to play the other games.

I preferred the storyline in HL2 though, but FarCry still wins it as i keep wanting to go back to it whereas the drawn out water buggy level at the beginning of HL2 puts me off re-playing it.

I always thought FarCry until I played HL2 the 2nd time, HL2 felt very story led the first time but 2nd time round noticed all the detail and bits and bobs.

Farcry in terms of open space, location and graphics was mind blowing ruined only by the save system and monstors, end was quite poor also.
.

Well said, could'nt have put it better myself mate ;)

Farcry music, atmosphere and story better than HL2 (not a fan of HL2 method of telling you nothing and tying things up in another game)

also true endings to both games i thought were poor but Farcry ending gets about 6/10 while HL2 about 5/10 in my book.

Farcry just seemed more fun to play

I really enjoyed both for their own reasons. Both are excellent games, and while a comparison is a bit difficult to do seeing as how different they are, I have to go with HL2 cause of all the extras that came with it :p.

I hated the grav gun - total gimick, fun for a while but got very bored of it in the end.

how is the mavity gun a total gimmick-it was amazing, took advantage of half-life 2's physics. HALF-LIFE 2 IS WAY BETTER THAN FAR CRY. :p

lol deffo HL2, mavity gun,sound,graphics,ragdoll....what did farcry bring to the table ?
Erm, Farcry came our about 5 months before HL2. So I would say it brought the awesome graphics first.
Also ragdoll physics were nothing new, UT2003 used them even.

So many great little touches. The characters, the real-time physics, the AI & some fantastic set-pieces. Not to mention the coolest sound of the heart-monitor of the Combine bleeping & changing to an un-ending tone after you offed them.
Farcry had realtime physics
Plus the AI in Farcry is far superior, the combine in HL2 just run out and stand still. In farcry the mercs run back, take cover, pin you down..... etc

Need I mention how much better the weapons in Farcy felt. They sounded and looked like they could cause pain. The pistol in HL2 may as well have been a water pistol, and the assault rifle sucks. The mavity gun got overly repetative too.
Some levels in hl2 were so dragged out they were horrible... (when can I get off of this damn buggy.......)
Whilst Ravelhom was a nice atmosphere, it just doesn't edge out the sheer scale and quality of the levels in Farcry. Need I remind people of the huge gorge you paraglide down? It looks awesome.

The only reason I have HL2, is because I wanted to see what the graphics were like, and I play CSS :)

The only reason I have HL2 is because I wanted to see what happened next in the story. I've had it since release & if I ever get around to completing it i'll get episode 1 for exactly the same reason.

Farcry definitely wins

Farcry by far - HL2 is very linear, and far too scripted in my opinion. The guns don't feel that 'fun' either.

However, if you get HL2, you also get CSS, Day of Defeat, and some other games depending on what Steam package you buy.

Half Life 2 -sucks- but it is accompanied by some of the best multiplayer games around.

Far Cry is better. HL2 had the mavity gun, which was ace, but Far Cry had everything else - non linear play, amazing graphics, good AI, good variety of weapons, and loads of enemies.

Well, they would both appear in my top 5 fps games of all time. However, HL2 would be in my top 5 games (regardless of genre or platform) of all time as well. FarCry is great, but HL2 is in a different league.

Loved both but Half Life 2 simply blew me away. The bit at the lighthouse before the bridge when the gunships are landing and dropping off combines just totally rocks.

Loved Farcry, but saying that it was just a run of the mill FPS but with lovely graphics. HL2 though had it all in my opinion, fantastic fun to play.

This has made me re-install farcry!

Me too.

And then I realised why it was taken off in the first place.

The thing is, that they are both great games... Both bring a few tricks to the table, personally, I feel that HL2 had the better graphics engine... There is so much more going on in and around you than FC, but the AI is dire in comparison. You have all read the points of the citizens sticking like glue to gordon, and this is a real pain, but then again, ordering them to a certain point surely isnt out of anyones skills is it?

The landscapes have been over-hyped I feel on FC too!

The sheer size of them is fantastic, but I feel it looks a bit too cartooney - Yes, I have also seen the cartoon look too and no I am not getting them confused... I think that they should have had darker greens etc and the monsters - yes, OTT I think there and the AI is better than HL2, but again, for me, HL2 does edge out in front due to the near-life like quality to the graphics.

And how many times did anyone here think a giant bug was cute in FC? Is there any particular part of FC that has had people gripped? The whole of FC was all *** same old stuff... At least HL2 had various types of gameplay, in various types of levels... Ravenholm, ProspektNova, AntiCitizen One to name a few... I found FC was pretty mcuh.... Erm. Island... Then an Island... Oh, a boat.. On an island.... You see what I mean?

Isnt there another one ( FC ) for the PC? I know its out on the consoles or one of them anyway, but I remember seeing adverts for it a while back...

Still say UnReal 2 beats them both for all-round gameplay.

Uses the unreal Engine which I fel gives extremely large terrains, like FC but also gives the quality of HL2.

Think your the first person I have ever seen who really likes Unreal2......
It didn't feel like Unreal should too me, it was poor.

Lots of people are saying HL2 is in a different league....
Why? It doesn't really do anything exceptionally better than Farcry.
Would like to know what it is about HL2 that makes it so much better in your eyes.
(aimed at Jokester, Curio and there were some others I think - not reading whole thread again :p)

Well it built on the HL story, has nice graphics, has variety of game play - the hover boat bits, Ravenholme, and some of the best implemented physics.

Far Cry wins it for me, as it's the best single player FPS I've ever played. It's also the only FPS released this millenium that I've played through more than once.

However, HL2 is a great game and does win in some categories like storyline. But for me, the important factors in a FPS are things like weapons, enemies, level design and environment (gfx/physics).

Interestingly my 3 fave FPS (FC/D3/HL2) all came out in 2004 - two years later, and they still haven't been bettered in my view.
