What is it about HL2 (and 1) that keep me reinstalling it at least twice a year to replay it?

Why cant other companies make games that good? Why is it that they take so long to get these add ons for it, they could have made millions by bringing out 2 add ons every year.

Yeh, but why is it that no other company can come close to making a FPS game as good.

Good question - for me I'd say F.E.A.R. came close although I struggled to get into it initially (too many battles with identical-looking troops) - once the story got going around the halfway mark I was hooked - even played one of the expansion packs (which sadly was crap).

I was hoping F.E.A.R. 2 would bring back some of that magic but it's too much of a console port (and too much of the same) so sadly F.E.A.R. is dead to me now :(

Other interesting alternatives include Dead Space (which I never finished 'cause I lost interest in it), Mirror's Edge (which I did finish and quite enjoyed) and BioShock (which I love but also had its failings - looking forward to the sequel though).

I guess the only game out there that really gets close to HL2's brilliance is another Valve game - Portal :)

It doesnt try to be anything else apart from what it is. the story is concistant, you invest in the charictors every single time you play and because it does such a great job first time round it installs a fondness in you that in 5 years time means you really dont notice the graphics lagging behind.

Episode three will arrive i have no doubt and im hoping that its going to be more of a full installmant than a expansion, and i have no doubt that like everyother incarnation of HL it will carrysome great graphical updates to keep it looking super sweet!

Fight the good fight gordon!!!

i prefer hl2's method of not having cutscenes and instead involving you in the story, it feels like a action movie.

Its funny you should say that because im now on my upteenth play through and i was thinking why cant they just give us more, i have absolutly no care what so ever about graphics. Id play a game that looked like Deux Ex if it has the same awasome gameplay and story.

Im going to be playing through that again at some point, tis an awesome game, absolutely love it, and i always run through all the Half-Lifes again as well every so often. :)

They don't make them like they used to, always crap storylines, to short, and rubbish console ports these days.:(

I can't :( any more.
After playing it twice the ''wow'' effect has worn off, I need Ep3 :p.

Same here. Honestly Going through HL2 again for the 2nd time with a new rig and being able to see it in all it's (now dated) looking glory, twas really laborious, especially the prison bit. Each to their own though. I might even try to finish EP2 later, been ages since I gave up on it :)

I'd say I play it through including the episodes about once every 9 - 12 months, and still love doing it even though I can probably tell you every bit of every level by now :p The story is amazing, the graphics age very well, very high production value... it's just overall an amazing game.

I think Valve were lucky enough to get a nice sized bunch of people who excel in the field of what they do, and due to that what they produce tends to be in another league compared to it's rival games. Other companies may have a couple, maybe none, but Valve has more of them and I guess it shows. I guess other companies like Valve who I'd class as having an abundance of people who excel in developing games (all aspects, story/design/programming etc) are Squaresoft and Blizzard. I've often wondered how good a game could be produced if it was worked on by all the figureheads of gaming.

If they don't announce a release date for Episode 3 at this year's E3, I shall drown myself. Stop with all this Left 4 Dead rubbish, Valve!
