Evening :)

I bought a Nikon f/1.8 50mm lens and Its at my local sorting office for me to pick up... however
I thought I'd have a look at the picture of the lens in an auction I won it from as it will be play time soon :) and I'm abit confused.
I bought what I 'thought' was a Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D, but after looking at the pictures, I noticed the lens doesn't have the D after 1:1.8
It looks very similar to the D but there are a few other very subtle changes I have now noticed...
I paid a little more than this lens usually goes for but I was determined to win it as I have wanted one for a while and had the money burning a hole in my pocket lol

What did I buy? (if thats possible to tell before I pick it up :D)
Is this the same modern budget D model of then lens?
or did I buy something else? lol

That fact remains its a manual aperture AF f/1.8 and as long as it takes clear shots. it will do what I wanted it for but I was just curious

Muchas gracias

haha I was hoping the same but It does say 1:1.8 on there so I think its safe to assume its is a f/1.8

That would be a nice surprise though :p

The camera uses the 'D'istance info from the lense/focussing to calculate TTL Flash exposures. All G lenses are also D lenses. It won't make any real difference in the real world. I done the same thing and bought a 70-210 AF when I thought it was a AFD.

Just had another stare at it and also noticed the focus ring has the focus details inside the lens covered by a clear window (which iirc is more common on the oldskool lenes?), and I think the f/1.8d just has the focus details printed on the side of the body...

I may have to just wait and see lol

The bloke says its hardly used and immaculate though so not sure.

Ah after reading some more on another site, I think its one of the earlier models with the metal body and plastic focus ring,
dunno if thats a good thing or a bad thing??
suppose it should age abit better? (cosmeticly)

well thats sort of a problem as I was planning on getting TTL flashgun soon, abit pointlesss if one of my lenses doesnt support it
I'll see what its like and return it if its not upto scratch, at the end of the day it was advertised as a 1.8D, which its not

There is a non D AF version of the 50/1.8 (technically an AF-I lens I think). It's the oldest of Nikon's 50/1.8s but also reputedly the sharpest. They stopped making them in 2000 or so I think.

It's a reasonable lens, the distance reporting is fairly immaterial really, most iTTL flash stuff will come out fine, only a few situations it'll fall down (and you'd be better learning 'real' lighting for those situations.

I do love Ken :D

His opinions are contradictory and usually pretty far out there but his site is a comprehensive source of information on Nikon glass in particular, there's very little he hasn't got a bit about on there. You've just got to take it with a whole pot of salt...
