Holiday help...

Hey guys,

So me and my mate are thinking of booking a college somewhere abroad for around july/august time, could any have some recommendations of where to go? The things we ideally want are cheap, in the middle of no where and close to a supermarket and that's it, we were thinking of Finland?

Your post is full of contradictions. Scandinavia certainly isn't the first place most people would think of when you want cheap, same as the middle of nowhere doesn't usually contain a supermarket (why do you want a supermarket, or is this some kind of typo?).

If you want cheap and the middle of nowhere eastern Europe is always an option. Romania has a a huge wilderness area, same as Poland. Both easy to get to and cheap when you are there (Romania moreso, can hire a car for 5 days for £50). There is also north/west Africa if you want somewhere a bit more exotic.

A bit more info on what you want and how long?

The only reason we would like a supermarket close is to get food etc, I does really have to be in the middle of no where just away from other houses or cottages, we are looking to stay for about a week, we found flights for around £150 return to Helsinki in Finland, do you reckon we would find much cheaper than that?

It's not just flights though, it's accommodation, food and travel. Expensive in most of Western Europe, said to be cheaper in Eastern Europe.

Then you just need a small village with a local shop nearby then!

Having been to both Finland and Romania, the latter is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the former...you can get a very nice 4 star hotel with breakfast for £40 a night for two people. In fact I think the best hotel in Bucharest was £100 a night when we went last year. Finland you'd be lucky to get a cheap hotel per person for £100. Then there's alcohol costs...

Cheap is a pretty relative term. My idea of cheap is quite different to others I know as we usually like to splash out on holidays as it's our fave thing to do and spend our money on

I've travelled to many places and prices vary so much so probably better off thinking of a specific budget.

But as others have said - Eastern Europe is certainly cheaper than Western and offers nice landscapes to explore on the cheap too. Maybe look into hiring a car or bike and getting out into the countryside as that would be cheap, while still seeing quite a lot.

Alcohol is cheap in these places too.

If you want cheap, probably avoiding France, Switzerland and Scandanavia would be a good idea.
I find Germany to be about average - it's not cheap but it's a lovely place for average prices.

Places like Slovenia could be an option too or Croatia. Romania, Bulgaria etc.
Try Andorra too - it's cheap there and it's in the mountains. Fly to Gerona and get a 3-4 hour bus ride there
