I'm a 3rd year geography student and my dissertation, which I've yet to start, is due April 23rd.

My girlfriend lives in Canada and I want to go and visit her, otherwise I won't see her until the summer.

The question is, when to go and how long for and whether I should go at all.

I'm thinking about going out on the 28th (next wednesday) for two weeks, getting back here on March 14th. That would leave me with basically a month to do my dissertation.

I could cut the trip short by a few days but it jacks up the price of the flights. My girlfriend thinks I should come for a week if Im worried about my work, but because I'm so strapped for cash, I thnk it would be economical to go over there for at least 10 days.

I know this is my decision but I'd like some of your thoughts, maybe to put my mind at ease. Deep down I know I'm going to be cutting it fine to finish my dissertation, but I really want to see my girl aswell.

In my opinion you're cutting it fine already. I wouldnt go at all. I'm assuming your dissertation is worth a decent percentage of your marks -- why throw away three years of hard work for a little holiday that could wait? Your University result will live with you for the rest of your life, this girlfriend may not. That might sound insensitive, but hey you asked.

For the truth.

You're cutting it too fine. Just complete your dissertation and then go. If you go, you've just got over a month to do it and 4-5 weeks isn't a lot of time even if you try the last minute thing.

:(

It's the research thats going to take the longest time. I'm doing interviews and questionnaires. Interviews will have to be scheduled and i don't know how long I'll have.

I mean, saying all this I know I need to get on with it now, but if I went away for a week, I doubt it'd have much impact.

I started my dissertation at easter and had plenty of time and still got 69%. I didn't do a single all nighter as well. Depends how commited you are. If you work hard at every oppurtunity you get and not put it off then its possible, if you are lazy then it won't.

Personally I would wait another month or so. How come your girlfriend is in Canada anyway?

Rubbish. You're just procrastinating and trying to find a legitimate reason for it. Suck it up and get it done!

What's your dissertation title?

In my humble opinion, I completely agree with what the prior posters have expressed; do not go.

Do your dissertation and see her after university or after easter as a reward.

Why cause yourself more stress than you have to? Start your dissertation this week rather than leaving it later or you'll end up regretting it, thinking "if only I'd had more time."

I doubt he's that committed if he hasn't begun it yet. I'm already brainstorming ideas for mine and it's not even due till next year.

Hmm, which reminds me... I need to e-mail my dissertation advisor for a meeting :D

as has been said a few times, don't go. its just not worth it. why waste 3 years work on a relationship that may not last, if she doesent understand then she's not worth it. and if she does understand, I'm sure she will make it up to you afterwards. ;)

I need a 2:1, so I desperately do want to do well, but trust me, I'd much rather leave uni now and go and see my girlfriend and forget about everything than stay here and plod on with a bloody dissertation!

I met her when I was on exchange over there last year.

I've already told her that I'm going to book flights and come and see her within the next month. If I decide not to go it's going to put strain on our relationship. Haing said that I would rather get my work finished. It's just if I dont see her next month, I won't see her until the summer. Its not a case of another month or two. I wouldn't see her until like July onwards.
