Holidays and DSLRs

or I could push the boat out and get a "man-bag". Just one point are the deep enough for a DSLR - not very experienced so I'm not sure.

Probably a good thing! I like mine because it never means I have to take the bag off, just reach in and grab. The big back packs I find a hassle but I am a bit blase with my camera, just wrap it in a tshirt and pop it in the bag

Just ensure your holiday insurance covers it, take the bridge camera as back up just incase.

i wouldnt worry about it, you will be one of many thousands of people with a DSLR there, i thought that when i went to amsterdam (plus i thoght i would forget it somwhere) and i regret it as i could have got some awesome pics of our road trip.

Dude.

I've got a Crumpler Muffintop 4000 and its OK for my D90, kit lens and 35mm lens plus cards etc. Its fairly discrete, I chose the black version so as to be a bit lowkey for when I was in Vietnam. I felt quite safe walking round Vietnam with my SLR, but then I personally think its more important to be aware of your surroundings than hiding kit everywhere. What I did do was put the Crumpler in my backpack so if I didn't need it it didn't look like I was carrying camera equipment, it was still easy to get to if needed, as well as being a bit more waterproof.
I can imagine that as long as you dont have massive L lenses etc you will be fine.
I went with 3 SD cards and probably could have used more as I was relying on the hotel pcs for transferring to my portable hard drive. I had 2 of them and backed up to both when I was in the hotels, gave one to my friend to carry in case 1 got lost/stolen. If you arent taking a laptop think about a 2.5" drive to use as I'm sure there are loads of internet cafes around these days.

This is what I do all the time. Just wrap the camera/lenses up and stick them in a normal bag, be it a 20l day pack or my 35L pack for wild camping. I've never found a camera bag suitable for my needs so I don't use one...

I've done multi day walking/camping trips, skiing, trecks in the desert, Gambia in the wet season and just walking round the town or going to an airshow, never had a problem. If it's likely to be very wet (eg gambia) then I stick the camera equipment in a lightweight drybag before sticking it in the normal bag.

Discreat, cheap(ish) and easy. :)

Hi all.

Thanks very much for all of the replies. It looks as though it's going to be DSLR.

I have a Lowpro backpack camera bag which I normally use as when I only take the essentials I have room in the bag for essentials that I take on the plane as hand luggage. However, if you know anything about camera's then the Lowpro might be a give away.

Noticed that some of you use an ordinary back pack (which I could) or I could push the boat out and get a "man-bag". Just one point are the deep enough for a DSLR - not very experienced so I'm not sure. That sounds like another good idea as they are now very popular.

Also, thanks for the idea about the CF cards - never would have thought of that. As I'm going for 18 days it won't be a-card-a-day, but I shall work out something.

Thanks for the replies and the ideas. Keep 'em coming.

Cheers

Dipper

I've got a LowePro rucksack and that's been with me to NYC, Boston, Rome, Berlin, Seville, Nice, Venice, Florence, Prague, Krakow etc etc. Never had anyone try to grab it off my back. If I don't want my DSLR for a bit, I do put it away. Also, if we're sat down for food/drink at a cafe, I stick my leg through one of the arm straps so it can't be pulled from under the table.

What insurance companies can you guys recommend? I am currently looking for cover at home and when abroad.

A few people over on TP recommended photoguard, I insured my kit (approx £1400 iirc) for £70~ last October for the year, this was with UK/EU cover + 30 days worldwide. Not had to use them so hope they will be OK if I ever do. The price scales on the value of your kit (obviously), seems quite linear in relation though.
