I'm no futurist, but my personal belief is that holographic displays wont ever take off without some major new tech brakethrough. What I think could potentially take off is a 3D display that is comprised of layered transparent LCDs You wouldn't be able to touch inside the display as it would be basically a big plastic box, but the potential for 3D could be interesting, I think there has already been work on this actually.
