HOLY CRAP!

EA games do seem to use low quality discs. All of my battlefield CDs developed fractures after a few months to the point that I couldn't use them anymore. Didn't help that it would thrash the disc every time the game is started though.

Happened to me too, 3 times actually, all different drives. The drives in question were 'usable ni the vertical position' or so the specification stated, each drive worked fine after removing the bits and air blasting them, they all also got rma'd straight away (with me keeping the originals) and as one of the disks was an xp pro disk, i managed to get another one of those too.... (well, i got money compensation for one...) Which was a bonus, as i still had the license key, and another disk, so i just spent it accordingly... down the pub :D

Yup I have seen this happen a couple of times, it seams the disc's are of a slightly lower grade so when the drive spins up, the centrifugal force causes them the shatter. If you take apart the drive and clear out all the bits and make sure the lens is still ok (if this is scratched its a bin job). To be fair if I was a dvd drive and someone tried to put a sims disc into me I would break it to.

First LOL,

Second this happened to me about 2 year ago, i think EA puts sims on crappy Disks lol, also if you contact EA they will tell you if you send the bits back they can send you a replacement disk but it was like £15 so i screwed it lol at the time my sis wasnt worth £15 when i wasnt working :p

Just get a new and improved drive mate. If i was you i would change it because it would be a risk to whoever uses your computer if they insert a disc in the drive and next thing you know BANG, pieces of disc flying everywhere and may cause some serious damage. :p

G0dfather.

My girlfriend had this happen to ALMOST 2 disks, The 1st one shattered, I was not happy. And then after playing with a replacement disk, After talking the shop into giving us another copy. The 2nd copy ended up with a crack down the centre of the disk!

Needless to say I didnt get another replacement so I contacted EA and got 1 sent directly. :)

Please excuse the thread title, but I've just had the shock of my life. Installing Sims 2 on Vista, and my DVD drive suddenly gives out a huge *CRACK* sound like a firecracker, and I jumped a mile....

Look what came out when I opened the drive...

Needless to say, part of the CD is stuck in the drive, and it won't close. Oh my god, never in a all my years have I ever heard of this happening.[/QUOTE]

Ouch, looks like the CD was weak or the drive was spinning to fast & the CD was damaged. There's a drive speed limited on the Plextor drive I want, if the CD you put in is damaged & you turn the drive up full then it'll probably shatter, that's why they limit the drive speed on the new Plextor drives.

Just a thought, maybe your drive was spinning to fast for the CD?

The DVD cases themselves are largely to blame. The ring holding the dvd in place often puts excessive pressure on the inside circle of the disk - so taking it in and out of the case causes fracturing. They haven't changed many disks to newer technology due to a slight increase in price.

Typical of EA

I've noticed this myself, I tend to take my disk's and put them in standard jewel cases because they tend to not put so much preasure on the center.

Same thing happend to me, I had to get hold of backups and use a NoCD Crack so i could play the game i spent almost £70 on (BF1942, RTR & Secret Weapons)

Why does EA use such cheap disks?

Had something similar happen to a BF1942 disk a year or so ago - ruined my month old DVD-RW :(

Still i was lucky that they are pretty cheap to replace now

Still haven't gotten around to getting a replacement disk from EA - don't think i can be bothered!

*remembers the aweful sound as the disk exploded  *

Same reason they don't put in simple little features needed, like widescreen, because they are idiots.
(I know there's hacks, but widescreen is supported in a lot of games by other companys, lets not go there)

Gave up buying from EA after Battlefield 2, they use hype to sell games, and then when you buy them, you get half finished crap thats sometimes unplayable until its patched.

The guys i game with stopped buying EA to, waste of time.... companys have no incentive to improve as long as they keep making profit.

Biiter? yeah damn right, they've been in the business too long now to keep making excuse, after excuse, after excuse........ and on, and on, and on, and ariston! ;) lol

happened to me to my 1st ever bought game when i was joung (transport tycoon deluxe) , killed my cd-rom drive with it, also was shocked when it happened, now impossible to get the game anywhere :(

Anyhow very bad luck, you can try to open your dvd to get all the bits out and hope the laser is undamaged, however if still on warranty i highly recommend to just sent it back in rma instead...

Game will be unrecoverable i think, unless ea will let you redownload the game on showing a legal cd key+ proof of buy etcetc...
