hello all,

Im looking at surround sound for my new TV i have a budget of about £500.
The all in one packages are really tempting for me as i have no audio knowledge at all, however a friend said it is more practical if i build a custom system as its more future proof.

With my limited funds i was wondering weather to get an AV reciever and then just shove my dismal DVD player on that with the TV OR a DVD player with a digital decoder for my speakers and i should be able to route my tv through this? Or a multimedia centre thingy  As speakers go i have no idea on how much of my £500 should go on this as i dont really know the quality gradient between the prices.

Any advice on products, websites and tips would be greatful!

cheers.

Most people seem to be pointing me to AV recievers and speakers?

Is this the right choice should i keep my old DVD player and then mabye use my Xbox360 or PS3 ( when it comes out) for HD media?

You're not going to get much for £500 AV amplifier + 5.1 speakers, but if you want 5.1 and only that budget it'll have to do.

Personally I would buy a stereo integrated amplifier and stereo speakers, £500 will get you nice setup. When you can afford it, buy the centre, surrounds, subwoofer and an av amplifier. That'll set you back around £1K+

What exactly is "HD Media"
