Hi all .

I'm looking into upgrading my home backup soloution .
Currently have 1x2tb external 1x4tb external drives connected to my computer and backblaze .
I also have a 1tb Google drive but I don't count this as backup .

Im looking to get something as one unit instead of getting more external drives .I have looked at wd my cloud duo Nas and synolgy 4 bay nas .
As in the furure I would like to make sure all photos and other files are kept safe .
Now I know a system with raid 1 would be best I think as I could swap out a faulty drive and the data would be safe for the whole family.

Any advice is all welcome .

No raid is completely safe but with raid 1 at least you are mirroring the data as opposed to striping it across the disks.

If you go for a NAS solution then I would recommend a 4 bay box for upgrading in the future. I've bought a 2 bay box before and regretted it and ended up buying another 2 bay box. I would also stick to 4TB or less for hard drive size in the NAS. You could initially buy 3 * 4TB and then expand the volume in the future when you need to by adding the 4th drive or you could stick a large 10TB drive in the 4th bay slot and configure as JBOD and use it as a stand alone drive to backup the 3 other raid drives onto.

Won't help you if the NAS dies and you cannot access the data on it however.
