I need some advice on a cctv system for my home which backs onto a field.

atm I dont know whether to go for a wireless or a wired system, wired should be no problem tbh if its cheaper/better.

I'd like it to record to my PC with motion detection but maybe like only do like 2-3 hours then over tape itself (ie not fill the hdd)

I'd like it to be night vision, ony needs 10m range. It's going outside to needs to stand up to the weather, Would like black casing if possible but not critical.

Would apreciate any advice from people that bought kits etc..

Cheers

ahem, i think i may be able to offer some advice here. :D

Firstly, word of warning "nightvision" cameras are usually utterly kak. A dozen IR leds aren't going to give you a very wide angle of vision. You'll get a 2 foot wide field of vision in darkness at 10m and it won't be very clear either. Get something with a separate IR source or get a proper camera with an automatic lense.

Allow 15-25 for a recording card. Don't worry about space, you can alter the fps and resolution to alter the space used.
£50 for a half decent IR ccd camera, or an auto lense box camera.
If you get a box camera, £30 for a housing with a heater.
Get cabled kit, easier to set up (you need to run a feed to the camera for power, so you may as well run the signal too)

My email is in my trust, let me know if you want links to where to get the parts.

No idea, but nightvision wont get good pictures (unless you spend a lot). Better to stick a bright light up or a series of smaller lights, which use the same detection as the camera.

If you can't recognise the faces, there's not much point in the system and you might as well just get a dummy camera.

can you recommend some good free software for this. i have the problem of the hdd filling every couple of days as well as stupidly big file sizes making it impossible to view the footage.

The kit i use comes with software. How big is the drive you are using? I've got 4 cameras running at high framerate and high resolution, and it uses 13gig a day.

Also, bear in mind that if it's a moving camera then the footage falls under the Data Protection Act! Well, that's what we were told anyway.

60gb i think. only 1 camera, wouldnt mind if i could get some kind of loop going so i dont have to delete files every couple of days. thing is at the mo when i delete 1 file i delete 50gb or summit daft so its most of the footage :/

No, it's not personal data. This is dealt with my the Information Commisioner.

How many different offices for pushing paper do the goverment need!

You can set the size of the segments you record in, so you only end up with individual files of maybe 250mb.

Any chance you could email me the links? :)

... but nightvision wont get good pictures ...

To reinforce this point, 1 of these cameras is "nightvision IR", 2 are ccd box cameras and the last one is a ccd dome.

Guess which one is the "nightvision" :( (the reflection on the top right is caused by the camera being inside a shop window, i get to watch his plants while he's away on sundays :))

Also interested in this thread and was going to post the exact same question yesterday. Area I live in is fairly nice with no real trouble but my house is at the end of a private drive that is side on to a public path so lately had a problem with kids.

Nothing major, just a couple of eggs on the front door etc but I've had enough and want to catch the little *******. All the kids that play/hang around are local and fairly young, if I can catch them I can just have a word with their parents and that should put a stop to it.

I'm a believer that if they get a good telling off/slap for the silly things like this they won't decide to up their game to any serious crimes.

I'm looking for two cameras that I can hook up to my PC and record on the event of movement (used to use a piece of software years ago called Gotcha that worked very well).

Will probably set them up inside the house for now as both areas of concern can be seen from upstairs windows.

Also are there any affordable capture cards that can monitor two video signals at once, I know years ago when I friend looked into this you needed to either get an extremely expensive card or a cheaper one that would swap between feeds on a set time cycle.
