Home Cinema - Must haves

Unless I've not understood something, I think what Sonny is saying there, is not that he has the opinion that films of 70 years ago cannot compete with more modern films; but that those older films can't compete because many people of the general public rate films primarily on things like visual quality. Many will dismiss older films because they are old and don't look all nice and shiny.

I don't think IMDB top 100 is meaningless, because it serves as a reminder of films that the person in question looking on the site, may have forgotten about. It's just based on opinions and opinion vary. Anyone who thinks that Shawshank is the best film ever because it's op on IMDB, well... they're just being a little silly to say the least. :p

Ah, I agree, totally.

IMDB isn't be all and end all but it serves as a good starting point.

if you wanted to show off your home cinema. i wouldn't be reaching for a lot of the films on that list.

mad max fury road IMO is a must have for anyone who has a great speaker setup. even on a 17" screen that movie would blow people away with a brilliant speaker setup.

it's the only movie I've seen at the IMAX and thought it made proper use of the speaker setup there. it was just constant too. yes a lot of it was "noise" but it sounded amazing.

it's the one movie I cannot wait to watch again at home to see the difference between IMAX and my home setup. I don't have whatever the ridiculous number of speakers they used 56? or was it 156? i cant remember the number but it was big.

but then you will have someone who hated the movie and it's soundtrack. so would they have it in their pile?

i personally don't even rate movies that highly they aren't long enough to build proper character development.

deadwood, the wire, breaking bad. now those as example of story telling pee all over movies. movies however can achieve bigger things, bigger sets, bigger explosions, bigger effects with their huge budgets blasted within 90 minutes.

deadwood however isn't something i would use to show off my home cinema either but for me it's up there in my top 3 and i could easily watch again and will do.

1. What are your Must have films to have?
2. any good places to get good dvd/bluray deals?

I don't see where OP specifically said he want something that purely shows off his system, I see the question as a more balance one that shows off the cinematic experience which places as much empathises on storytelling as sounds and visuals.

I know I've posted my recommendations in here already, I do have an alternative suggestion for the OP. This is what I've done to some degree.

Try to remember what films you have seen on the telly at home when you were little & enjoyed very much, in a way you wished you'd seen them at the Cinema but you were too young or not even born. Get those films.

I've done this with a couple of old 50's Sci-fi Films. (Forbidden planet & The day the Earth stood still) I'm still waiting for This Island Earth to be released on Blu-ray.

Ty pretty much bang on. A lit of it is you forget film names or forget that one movie that was great. A lot of you hit nails on my head as a reminds of good films.

Bought a ton on blurays now hitting 200+ but please keep them coming :)

I have found the IMDB top 250 a very useful tool.

Because of it I have watched quite a good few movies I had never heard of and there have been very few stinkers.

I strive to get the best quality movies I possibly can for my cinema but in all honesty I can still absolutely enjoy some naff rip of some long lost 50s sci fi.
