Home cinema with 4K HDR player

Thanks for the info. I've read up on what you said about HDR, I had no idea. Looking around it seems Samsung have the most options for certified TVs with the appropriate brightness.

Seeing as though the TV is the "centrepiece" I would probably up the TV budget to get a decent one if I were to go for the Xbox as the player, rather than the speakers. I'm going for 2ch/stereo to start with, in a tiny living room. I can upgrade the speakers later but I've only ever used built in TV speakers, so anything is an upgrade!

What do you think of the Samsung KS9000 49"?

No problem. It's a real shame manufacturers haven't been clearer with HDR, since it's basically what makes UHD worth it. I've got several colleagues at work who got 4K TVs on black friday only to be frustrated that they can't see any visible difference, when i told them about HDR on those sets they were more than just a bit miffed. I personally don't think any TV should have the word "HDR" in it's title or description on a retailers site unless it meets the Ultra HD Premium specs.

Samsung KS9000 is a great TV but the KS7000 is the better buy as the KS9000 doesn't really bring much else as they're the same panel. If you can get one close to the KS7000 price though, pull the trigger on it.

Unfortunately you missed out the big sell off they did on them a while ago before their new TVs were announced, the 55" KS7000 was going for £850.

The 49" KS7000 can be hand for £799.99 new from most sites (co-op electrical etc). I'd also check eBay out, you can snap them up normally for around £600 used or refurbished.

If you're going stereo with speakers first, i'd highly recommend the Q Acoustic 3020 (Or 3010), Q Acoustic have been pretty much the #1 speaker maker for bookshelfs giving the best bang for buck for the last few years. Again these can be hand second hand quite widely. Plus if you decide you want floor-standers in future, you can then use them as rears.

If you prefer style speakers, i'd recommend the Q Acoustic 7000, KEF 3005SE, Monitor Audio MASS... But you're going to have to bump your budget up quite a bit for that, style speakers (good ones at least) cost more.

Just checked the KS7000, the stupidly wide stand is 1 inch to wide to fit on my TV stand :(

Is it possible to modify the stand?

Yeah. Believe you can buy an alternative version, think richersounds had one. Few other people had same issue on AVForums, probably worth you asking on there. You not able to wallmount?

Thanks, found just what I need: VESA pedestal stand. Not really able to wall mount as somebody decided to run all the mains cables right behind where I'd have to drill!

Thanks for your help, looks like the KS7000 is the one to get. As for the speakers, I did look at the Q Acoustic 3020 before but a bit over my original budget.

I do have a quick question regarding the AVR though - reading through the manual there is an option to down mix multi channel audio into stereo, I take it I want this enabled as I only have front speakers? What happens if I add a centre?

I'd let the AVR manage it. It will identify which speakers are connected during initial setup and output accordingly. If you add a centre, run the setup again.

AVR's have a 2 channel mode, so even if you have 7.1 speakers, it will down mix a multi channel sound track to either 2.1 (bass management) or 2 channel where L/R are full range.

If you add a center, and listen to multi-channel, then center audio will be played to the center speaker, and again if you press 2 channel (or 2 channel pure) it'll be the same as above paragraphh

Ok cool, thanks, makes sense now.

On the TV front, I can't find any KS7000's available to buy anywhere. So I'm looking for an alternative!
