Home drinking - cider / perry tasting notes

Green Goblin is far and away my favorite cider. A few supermarkets in Canterbury sell the bottles in packs of four, or on their own.

Kopparberg is also really nice, any of the flavours are good :)

Both are available at pretty much every Morrisons or Sainsbury's nowadays. Green goblin is nice. Kopparberg was great until I found you could buy it in crates at Ikea, and promptly got damn sick of it after about 4 crates. So sugary.

Yep Koppaberg is pretty much an alcopop it's so sweet... Not my cup of tea really.

Oh, and Old Rosie... avoid it like a bad-aids infected scitzophrenic rottweiler that's just received an enormous telephone bill. Unless you enjoy brain shattering hangovers & vomiting at 10am.

I will never understand quite how an 8% cider can possibly cause so much damage like Old Rosie does. It's evil and will catch you completely unaware. I have some home made 9% cider that is less potent!

Old Rosie is good stuff though, just best to keep to 2 pints or less!

I normally lean towards Bulmers (apple or pear) as its inbetween the shockingly sweet that makes your teeth ache and the super fizzy all you drink is air type drinks.

My top cider is proper rough Somerset scrumpy, although I did have a very nice scrumpy that was put into whisky barrels for a few months.

Ah, summer and cider.......bring it on :)

What I do know is that you will be very merry testing all those at once :)

Not had Scrumpy Jack's before. Was cheap at the Co-op, 3.99 for 4 cans of 500mL. Will be drinking it later tonight :)

What no Westons? Surely the Organic and the Reserve deserve a look in.

the special reserve stuff is amazing, had some last week. it was just right, not too sweet, not too dry, at 8% i thought it was going to blow my head off, but i was pleasantly suprised at how smooth and tasty it was.

6. Aspall Perronelles Blush Suffolk Cyder 5.4%

+ Nice balanced flavour between sweet and dry
+ Lovely copper / strawberry colour
+ Posh bottle

This is a clear winner so far. As good, if not slightly better than the Aspall Suffolk Dry Cider.

7. Scrumpy Jack 6%

+ Nice robust flavour, but more gentle than I remember from my youth
+ It's old skool cider
- Deserves to be cloudy, surely. I've tried the west country stuff and this pales in comparison
- Not the cleanest / purest taste

Verdict: old skool

8. Westons Premium Organic Cider 6.5%

+ Very dry which suits my taste buds
+ Very appley
- Not the purest of flavours
- I bet you can get a decent hangover on this one

Verdfict: Similar but better than the Scrumpy, I like this. Strong appley flavour, but very drinkable. 3rd so far after both Aspall's and the Waitrose Perry.

To be fair - I was probably harsh on the Westons Organic. It was very nice, and unfair to mark it down for "maybe producing a hangover" but ultimately I do feel the Aspalls is nicer.

Now I've moved onto....

9. Waitrose Extra Strong Cider 8.2%

+ Badger strength
+ Dry and smooth tasting
- I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE

Verdict: I shouldn't have drunk this in combo with the rest. It seems quite nice though.

I used to love Koppaberg until I tried some proper local ciders from cornwall and one in particular from Frome. The mass produced stuff tastes so fake in comparison. In conclusion, move to the westcountry!

Yay, Aspall Cider

It's fantastic, in fact I urge anyone who hasn't tried it to hunt it down in their local pub / supermarket. I'm back into cider's in a big way.

What's been a disappointment is that all these bottled perries / ciders are so clear, unlike all those cask ones you get down southwest.

Henney's - Frome Valley Apple - Sweet Cider

Superb bitter sweet taste, get through a few bottles in the week :)

can only seem the find the sweet version in Morrisons though.

Indeed, Henney's was the cider to which I was referring above, certainly one of the best i've tasted, and not very expensive either. The medium I found a well balanced mix of that sweet fruity flavour with a nice dry edge, reminiscent of some of the very best ciders i've had.

Found that in Sainsbury's in Bristol (Dingles store on Clifton triangle).
