Hey. I'm sad to say I know absolutely nothing about networking. In order to change this I have a few computers running different operating systems, a basic router/firewall (Azurewave aw-nr580), some patch and some crossover cables. The intention is to play with this until I know more.

However I'm on a uni network, where leaving my computer completely open is probably unwise. I'm trying to get the hardware router to block connections to the network while allowing me to use Google and apt-get.

To this end, I think I've told my router to allow tcp port 80 and udp 53. Firefox is still working, bittorrent is not. This image should make it immediately obvious what I've done.

So, am I good to go? At least to try to get the computers sharing files between each other, and later to try to daisy chain them with only one connected to the router.

Maybe I'm just paranoid. Cheers

edit: ftp doesn't work, and neither does web based email. Should probably find out what ports these use and add them to the list.
