I put a claim in with my insurance provider after I accidentally broke my tv. My TV is over 5 years old and when i bought it was around £900, (Samsung 51inc plasma 3d smart tv).

It looks like from the latest update they are considering issuing me with a pc world/Currys voucher for £650. Would you consider this reasonable? I will lose my investment in 3d blu rays and glasses though as it won't be enough for a 3d tv, they are rare beats these days!

Cheers all :)

My 2p for what its worth, I'd be chuffed with anything over half the value of the original purchase. Reasons being are, the TV is over 5years old, is probably already out of warranty and is running on dead technology (plasma).

You could ask for more but at the equivilant of £50 depreciation per year - I would say the insurer are being more than generous.

You could argue that that budget won't get you something with the equivalent features, it's probably worth trying. That said, I'm not sure I'd have ever called 3D Blu-ray an "investment".

We will at Our option – replace with the nearest current equivalent – any necessary repair – pay in cash Our replacement cost for loss or damage

I think it's difficult to work out what the current equivalent will be seeing as 3d is not really around these days. In every other respect I'm sure I can get an equivalent quality TV for the amount suggested, although I will really miss the plasma panel, the deep blacks are great for films. I'm not too bothered about 4k as I don't have any 4k content, although I do think HDR looks great.

Well it's not an investment in terms of retaining or gaining value, but I do have a fair few 3d films and 6 sets of glasses. I don't need 3d but I will miss it a bit, only upside is that the production of 3d blu rays will stop meaning I won't miss anything new.

You should request that you utilize the 'feature' and can they find a product to match that feature.
They may have already tried this, found they couldn't, thus are going to issue a value amount.

What is your excess on your home insurance for accidental damage?
As I'd have thought between £650 plus excess you're getting quite close to the £900 original value.

I once went back to the OEM and asked them what the equivalent model was to a legacy model, and the insurer took that as sufficient evidence. All they did was write the new model number on a "with compliments" slip in a store. There are samsung stores knocking around i think?

depending on your insurance if you have new for old then you can counter with TVs which match your current TV spec 1080 3d etc. find some TVs which offer the same as yours or slightly better and discuss them with the insurer but I believe the insurer's use a system which tells them what todays equivalent model is which is where they get there value from

you could pre-empt them too - maybe get some kind of written quote from Richer Sounds, even Lewis's, on what they think might be the current matching TV ...
an 'expert' opinion.
I would be considering how much I had payed too, for the accidental cover, last time I renewed the premium would have >doubled for accidental cover
so would expect a rolls royce service in the case of a claim;
albeit, it is like car insurance and premium will increase next year :( with little correlation to money they pay out on claim.
